Biography
Yakov Vasilyevich Utkin was born in 1903 in the Mezensky district , Arkhangelsk province , into a working-class family. Russian. Member of the CPSU (b) since 1924 . Before being drafted into the Red Army in 1925, he had three classes of education. Yakov Vasilyevich worked a lot to improve his general educational level and already in the army during the year he mastered his own educational program in seven classes. In 1927 he successfully graduated from the Air Force Military-Theoretical School, at the end of 1928 - the Sevastopol military school of pilots, in 1936 - the Lipetsk Higher Flight-Tactical School .
He was a strong-willed commander and an excellent pilot, a skillful organizer and educator of his subordinates. Under his direct supervision, the formation of the Saratov military aviation school of pilots , the training of the first graduates on the R-5 aircraft and the transition to training military pilots for the Red Army Airborne Forces took place .
In 1942, Lieutenant Colonel Utkin was sent to the front as a navigator in the 27th Fighter Aviation Regiment ( 205th Fighter Aviation Division , under the command of Vladimir Ivanovich Bobrov .

During training and combat work on the front of the Great Patriotic War from January 20 to the present, Comrade Utkin proved himself as a tireless fighter pilot. As a regiment navigator, he perfectly conveyed his knowledge to the young flight crew, thanks to which the flight crew feels confidently and calmly in the air, knowing perfectly the combat area. Comrade Utkin, in spite of his 40 years as a fighter, boldly rushes into battle, searches for the enemy and bravely fights at fascist vultures from minimal distances. By doing so, showing the young flight crew the impulse and desire to fight the enemy and love the flight business and take care of their planes. 05/14/1943 The enemy tried to bomb our airfield. Tov.Utkin boldly rushed into the air at the enemy and put the airfield to bomb. In this air battle, he personally shot down one of the aircraft of the enemy U-87.
from June 7, 1943 he was appointed commander of the 438th Fighter Regiment .
But on July 8, 1943, Yakov Vasilyevich died (was missing) in one of the air battles at the Kursk Bulge .
