Creation History

Filming began in the first half of 1917, was long and continued in difficult conditions. The operator Louis Forestier recalled that the operator A. Ryllo [6] , exhausted by working with several directors, “fell asleep literally on the move”:

“Viskovsky was rehearsing with Vera Kholodnaya for the scene“ Woman Who Invented Love ”. The light was set, exhausted Ryllo blissfully slept on a chair near the unit. When the rehearsal was over, they woke him up ... The stepladder, forgotten by the drapery, the operator noticed, only when he woke up completely, that is, towards the end of the shooting ” [1] [7] .

In the process of filming, there was not enough electricity, they were filmed at night, the director was nervous and sabotaged. The performer of the main role, “the queen of the screen,” Vera Cold, often fainted, but came to herself, got up and played again [8] .

Reviews

"The picture can not be denied in the external entertaining and conditional beauty" - wrote the newspaper " Life of Art " in 1918 [1] [9] .

Scenes of Italian life, nature and life captured colorful. External details are interesting, such as, for example, paintings on the hippodrome [1] .

According to a number of critics of those years, the role of Antonella failed Faith Cold.

The “queen of the screen” was accused of being “too sincere in depicting love”. Insidiousness lacked her Antonella. It was not enough that she was rational and dissolute when she lied to her husband, when, after an ardent love for Lieutenant Gilly, she tangled the old duke with her nets ... She wanted to believe her Antonella. Her Antonell could not be despised and hated ... [10]

Film critic Veronin (Valentin Turkin) in his review in “Kino-gazeta” (1917, No. 22) referred the film to “great great films” [11] . He noted that Vera Cold was good, but in places "the feeling of annoyance seizes."

In the film “The Woman Who Invented Love” ... she had to create character, comprehend it, endure and develop throughout the long nine parts with a change of scenery, faces and events. Alas, all that the artist created was not from her, but from an alien task. She was convincing, while she remained Vera Kholodnaya, but immediately lost her convincingness as soon as she wanted to “play” Antonella [11] [12] [13] .

Cameraman Louis Forestier believed that Vera Cold, who played the role of Antonella, “was very good in the first half of the picture, while she genuinely experienced her love affair with the lieutenant, but in the second part of the picture, where she needed to play and“ invent ”a love for the old duke nothing good happened ” [14] .

In contrast to the critics of 1918, film critic Romil Sobolev in his book “People and Films of Russian Pre-Revolutionary Cinema” (1961) praised the work of Vera Kholodnaya, believing that “we already have an actress” [15] . This opinion was also shared by Nei Zorkaya , regarding this role as one of the best films with the actress [16] .

Director V. Gardin noted: “The films“ Last Tango ”and“ Woman Who Invented Love ”testify that Cold Faith possessed not only an amazingly beautiful appearance, but also the ability to use the latter as a means of transmitting her emotions” [17] .
