Biography

Maud Farris was born in Morley, Michigan on January 21, 1887. She married Jason Farris, a farmer and worker, in 1903. She was 16, he was 23. They first lived in Angola, Indiana , and then moved to Coldwater, Michigan , in 1923.

Maud had seven children: four sons and three daughters. She worked in a factory, a maid, a baker and a restaurant chef. She retired in the 1970s. Her husband, Jason Farris, died at the age of 72 in 1951. Her second marriage to Walter Luz lasted only three years, ending in his death. [one]

At the age of 93, her appendix burst and some of her grandchildren were afraid that she might die. Maud has lived in a nursing home since she fell at home in 1991 and broke her hip when she was 104 years old. She was still very healthy, said Coldwater Nursing Marketing Director. She still drank milk every day and ate all the dishes in the dining room.

Subsequent years

In later years, Maud became known for her large garden and her extreme generosity. When the police caught the children who entered her house and stole the money, Farris-Luz refused to bring charges. "She said they probably needed it more than she did," said Donald Farris, a 64-year-old grandson.

Maud never smoked or drank. She really loved to fish. Home remedies were another eccentricity. The mod was often yellow with mustard. The woman did not spend a day in the hospital until she was 95 years old. In her later years, she was known as Mod Luz, legally changing her last name.

In 1997, at the age of 110, Luz wrote a letter to Jeanne Kalman , the oldest person whose age has ever been confirmed. [2] Kalman died the same year at the age of 122. After the death of Marie Bremont on June 6, 2001, editors of the Guinness Book of Records declared Luz the oldest person in the world on June 23, 2001. In the absence of any birth certificate, they confirmed her age using records from the U.S. Census Bureau and her 1903 marriage certificate. On March 18, 2002, Luz died of pneumonia at 115 years old, surviving six out of seven of her children. Helen Farris, wife of Donald Ferris Sr., remembers one regret that Maude has lived for so long. Helen said that no one else calls her “Mod”, but they call her Mrs. Farris or grandmother, because she outlived everyone who called her “Mod”.

At the time of her death, there was only one of her seven children, Lucille, who died a year later. Maud also had 26 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren and 65 great-great-grandchildren.

Longevity in her family

Maud had a sister who lived to be 99 years old (the other two brothers and sisters apparently died young). Her mother died at 87, their father was killed at the age of 62. She married a man who died at the age of almost 74, and he had a brother who died at 75. She was depicted at the age of 100 on a rare family photograph of five generations with each generation divided exactly into 25 years. The picture shows her her son Clare at the age of 75, her grandson Donald at the age of 50, her great-granddaughter Cindy Coliver at the age of 25 and her great-great-granddaughter Mallory, who was born on the 100th anniversary of the mod. Her children did not inherit her longevity. The first-born died at the age of 82, all the rest died at the age of 77 or less (one of them died only at 28, and two did not survive in infancy, the rest lived on average up to average life expectancy). The last daughter, born 15 years later, was the only surviving mother. She was ill a lot and died the following year at the age of 75.
