Biography
Jacques Francois Chambray was born March 15, 1687 in the Norman city of Evreux [1] . From childhood, he was destined for admission to the Order of Malta and was a page at the Maltese Grandmaster [2] .
After serving for several years in the army in France, Chambray returned to Malta , entered the fleet and took an active part in the struggle of the Maltese knights against the Ottoman Empire . Particularly distinguished himself in on August 16, 1732, when he attacked the Turkish squadron in the Nile Delta near the town of Dumyat with small forces and captured the 72-gun ship of the Turkish fleet [2] .

In 1735, the Order of Malta significantly reduced its navy, and Jacques Francois Chambray, without work, began to build and strengthen at his own expense a town on the island of Gozo [3] , which is part of the Maltese archipelago located northwest of Malta due to what the city came to be called Cité neuve de Chambray [2] or simply . From 1749 to 1750 he served as governor of the island of Gozo ( English Gozo ).
Jacques Francois Chambray died on April 8, 1756 in Malta [4] .
