Povarskaya Street is one of the best preserved ancient streets in the central part of the city. Almost every building here is of significant historical value. Eclectic and Art Nouveau mansions occupied by foreign embassies alternate with apartment buildings and old Empire-style buildings. One of such buildings is the Rostov House , which is located near the Garden Ring itself, which, according to legend, served as Leo Tolstoy's prototype for the mansion of heroes of his epic novel War and Peace .

Officially, in local history literature this house is called "Sollogub Manor (City Estate of Princes Dolgorukovs)", has number 52/55 along Povarskaya Street and is associated with almost the majority of famous writers of the 20th century, since it was here that the board of the Union of Writers of the USSR was located .

To date, this organization has long lost its exclusive status, the building is noticeably dilapidated, its side wings are occupied by restaurants. The monument to Leo Tolstoy, standing in front of the building on the axis of the front gate - the main entrance, is practically not visible from the street. Today’s Muscovites are much more aware of the large-scale monument to Leo Tolstoy on the Maiden’s Field , and the sculpture’s historians know the monument to Leo Tolstoy on Prechistenka , which was part of the Leninist plan of monumental propaganda .

Nevertheless, the monument on Povarskaya, both in its history and in artistic decision, is also of considerable interest.

The monument was erected in 1956 . It was made by sculptor G.N. Novokreschenova and is her main work. Galina Novokreschenova was promoted by the architect V. N. Vasnetsov [1] .

The monument is a gift from Ukrainian writers to Moscow writers in connection with the 300th anniversary of the reunification of Ukraine with Russia [2] [3] .

Leo Tolstoy is depicted sitting in a thoughtful pose. He kind of looks around the front yard around him. Tolstoy is dressed in peasant clothes, but sits in a comfortable, not at all peasant chair, literally growing into a pedestal restrained in design.
