Biography
Jonas Carpignano was born on January 16, 1984 in the New York Bronx, and grew up in New York and Rome. His father is Italian by birth, his mother is an African American born in Barbados [1] .
Jonas began making films while still studying at Wesleyan University, which he graduated with honors in 2006 . After working for several years in the film industry in Italy and the United States, he entered the Tisch School of the Arts of New York University, where he directed his first short films, which were screened at Cannes [2] , Venice Film Festivals, and the Film Festival Sundance .
In 2015, Jonas Carpignano made his debut full-length film "The Mediterranean", the world premiere of which took place in the program of the International Critics Week at the 68th Cannes International Film Festival. The film received positive reviews from critics, and has been shown at many festivals around the world since its release, such as the London Film Festival, AFI Fest and the Stockholm International Film Festival, where it received three awards, including awards for the best debut film and best actor. In 2015, the National Council of Film Critics of the USA awarded the film with an award for the best directorial debut and included the Mediterranean in the list of the five best foreign language films of the year [3] .
In 2016, Jonas Carpignano was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship [4] .
In 2017, Carpignano made his second full-length dramatic film “ Chambra, ” which premiered at the 70th Cannes International Film Festival in the section “Two Weeks of Directors”. The film, one of the executive producers of which was Martin Scorsese , won the Europa Labels prize for the best European film [4] . He was selected from Italy by the nominee for the Best Foreign Language Film for the 90th Oscar ceremony [5] , but did not get on the short list of nominees. However, the tape received a number of awards at international film festivals and was nominated for the Silver Ribbon of the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists as the best film and the Independent Spirit award for best directorial work [6] . In 2018, “Chiambra” was nominated in 7 categories for the Italian national film award “ David di Donatello ”, including for the best film [7] [8] . Jonas Carpignano received the award for best directorial work [9] [10] .
In 2018, Jonas Carpignano joined the jury of debut films at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival [4] .
