Biography
Peter Paul Koch was born on March 15, 1879 in Mainz ; he was one of the students of William Conrad Roentgen during the stay of the future Nobel laureate in Munich [2] . Since 1919, Koch was the first director of the State Physical Institute (Physikalische Staatsinstitut) at the newly founded University of Hamburg . On November 11, 1933, he was among the more than 900 scholars and teachers of German universities and universities who signed the " Statement of Professors on the Support of Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist State ."
Peter Koch's relations with colleagues at the physics institute gradually became aggravated in connection with Koch’s active national socialist position. In particular, he condemned his colleagues working on nuclear research: he wrote in the Gestapo about their “neutral position”. During the period of the National Socialist dictatorship, Koch was "responsible for the quarter" (blockleiter, German. Blockleiter ) of the NSDAP . After the end of World War II, Koch was immediately, in 1945, dismissed by the British occupation administration. He committed suicide by taking cyanide on October 1, 1945.
