Biography

Born in Bergen [1] in the noble family of Jacob von der Lippe (1870-1954). Brothers - Fritz and Jens. He was also the brother-in-law Margrethe, the grandson of Konrad Fredrik, the great-grandson of Bishop Jacob and cousin of Admiral Jacob [2] and whaler Anton [3] .

He joined the Norwegian Labor Party in 1921, but when a split occurred in its ranks, he joined the Communist faction. In 1927, he spent five weeks in jail without a court verdict, along with Henry Christiansen, Otto Luichn, and Albin Mann after a police raid on the party’s office [4] . He was the secretary of the Komsomol of Norway from 1925 to 1929 [1] and headed this organization from 1927 to 1928. In 1928 he became a member of the Executive Committee of the Communist International of Youth [5] . In 1929 he became a member of the Secretariat of the CPN. In the early 1930s, he trained at the International Leninist School in Moscow , and later headed its Scandinavian section, after which he was transferred to Vladivostok . Later returned to Norway.

From 1937 to 1945 and 1950 to 1972 he was a member of the Politburo. From 1949 to 1963 he was the party secretary. In 1941, during the Second World War , he fled to Sweden , fleeing German occupation . He was imprisoned in Sweden for a year and a half, after his release he joined the Norwegian armed forces in exile. [5] [1]

He worked as a journalist at Arbeideren before the war, and at Friheten from 1947 to 1949. In 1963, he edited the publication of the party’s official history, Norges kommunistiske partis historie [6] .
