Biography
Born on August 22, 1915 in the village of Gvozdavka II , now the Lyubashevsky district , Odessa region , in a poor Moldovan family. After graduating from school, in 1931 he began his career as a teacher and then as an inspector of schools. In 1941 he graduated from the geographical faculty of Odessa University . During World War II, he fought on the fronts of Ukraine, the Caucasus , Poland , Germany . He went from a private to an officer - a tank commander. In the battles he was wounded, shell-shocked, but after recovery he again returned to the ranks of the army. He was awarded two military orders, three medals. Demobilized in 1946 [1] .
Since 1946, he worked at Kiev University as a research fellow at the Geography Research Institute. During the period of teaching in geodesy and cartography (1952-1976) he held the posts of senior teacher, since 1955 - associate professor, since 1970 - professor [2] . Candidate dissertation "Geography of rural settlements of the right-bank forest-steppe and Polesie of the Ukrainian SSR (attempt of comparative economic and geographical analysis)" was defended in 1952. He defended the first doctoral dissertation in the Ukrainian SSR , specializing in “cartography”, “Problems of integrated mapping of the economy of collective farms and state farms, administrative regions and regions of the Ukrainian SSR” in 1969. In 1970-1977 - Head of the Geography Sector of the Institute of Geophysics. S.I. Subbotin, Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, head of the cartography department, in 1986-1996 - leading scientific researcher and consultant [3] . Retired due to health problems.
Scientific associate of Professor A. S. Harchenko . Recognized supervisor and founder of the new scientific school "Cartographic studies of nature, population and economy, environmental and geographical problems and situations." He performed the scientific justification of agricultural mapping, the main provisions and practical ways of generalization on integrated economic maps; developed new types of agricultural and nature conservation maps. He developed scientific programs for several complex atlases of Ukraine. Compiled and carried out scientific editing of about 200 original maps. He was the executive secretary of collections of scientific papers and integrated thematic mapping of Ukraine, a member of the editorial boards of journals: “Bulletin of the University of Kiev. Series "Geography", "Bulletin of Geodesy and Cartography." Vice President of the Ukrainian Geographical Society. Acting Chairman of the Bureau of the Department of Earth Sciences of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and member of the Geology, Geography and Geophysics Section of the Committee on State Prizes of the Ukrainian SSR. He was elected a member of the International Cartographic Association, the National Committee of Cartographers of the USSR, a corresponding member of the Commission of National Atlases of the International Geographical Union of the United States.
Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Ukrainian SSR since 1985. He was awarded the diploma of the Geographical Society of the USSR "For outstanding scientific works in the field of geographical sciences" in 1982. Honorary member of the Geographical Society of the USSR since 1980.
The author of more than 200 scientific papers. Author and scientific consultant of the " Geographical Encyclopedia of Ukraine ". He prepared 15 candidates and four doctors of sciences [4] .
