Creation History

In the fall of 1913, Macke, together with his wife and children, moved to Switzerland , to Hilterfingen , on Lake Tuna , where he spent eight months (from September 1913 to May 1914), working intensively. The painting “The Promenade” is the first of the works created during this period, and the first where Macke used the motif of a walk in the park by the bridge and water. Of decisive importance for Macke was the influence of modern French painting, primarily the works of Robert Delaunay (the simultaneous (simultaneously open) “ Windows ” and “ Circles ”, which were exhibited at the in Berlin, organized by Macke, Franz Mark and Gertwart Walden ) For Macke, this event was a turning point in understanding the role of light and color in painting. According to Elizabeth Macke , in his latest paintings appeared “airiness of colors, wonderful luminosity, especially in the green tones of trees, the transparency of the heavenly blue, sunspots on the earth, where shades change from shining yellow to deep red-brown” [2] . He painted figures of people without sharp contrasts, without drawing a clear outline around them [3] .

Back in 1910, Macke defined the goal of his work - “to sing nature”. In Hilterfingen, the former motifs of his paintings and sketches gained a more enhanced sound. Makke created the “Paradise” of a modern man with unhurried walks through the streets of the city, a relaxing rest in the park, boat trips and swimming [3] .

Description

In the center of the composition is a young man in an elegant suit and a summer hat talking with a lady in a red dress and a blue jacket holding an umbrella in her hands. This couple seemed to be fenced off from the environment, not noticing anything around. Their faces are only outlined, anonymized, devoid of specific features. Another lady, wearing a hat with a white feather, stands leaning on the bridge railing. The picture creates a feeling of blissful peace of a quiet sunny day, in which a modern person plunges, moving away from everyday fuss. Here he is in harmony both with himself and with nature [3] .
