Before Formula 1
Yamamoto began his career in 1994 at the Suzuka Racing School ( Karting ) and advanced along the career ladder, became the third pilot of the Formula 1 Jordan team in the Japanese Grand Prix 2005 Formula One season .
Formula 1
2006: Super Aguri
On June 8, 2006, Sakon Yamamoto joined the Super Aguri team as a test pilot and third rider, helping Takume Sato and Frank Montagny in Friday's free practice sessions. Yamamoto replaced Montagny behind the wheel of the second car at the German Grand Prix in Hockenheim. Due to mechanical problems and a stalled engine, he drove just one lap in two races. He also damaged one of the new chassis of the SA06 team during a free practice at the German Grand Prix. He launched on the twentieth round of the third race in Turkey .
At the Italian Grand Prix, Yamamoto suffered from a problem that plagued most pilots in qualifying - delamination of tires and had an accident, because of this he started from the last spot on the starting grid. Later in qualifying, Fernando Alonso punctured the tire on car fragments from this accident, which resulted in a penalty for blocking Felipe Massa and dropping him from fifth to tenth place on the starting grid. During the race, Yamamoto ran into hydraulic problems and started from the pit lane, eventually he came down when it was impossible to continue the race.
At the Chinese Grand Prix, Sakon finished for the first time in his career, albeit in four laps from the leader, in sixteenth place. After the race with the Japanese there was a curious incident. Sakon's partner, another Japanese Takuma Sato, was responsible for the accident, which left Nick Heidfeld from fourth to seventh place. After the race, Nick went to the Super Aguri boxes to sort out the relationship with Sato. Having met Yamamoto, who looks like Sato and is dressed in the same uniform, Heidfeld took him for the offender and began to state his accusations, and Sakon, who speaks poor English, could not understand what they wanted from him. For this misunderstanding Heidfeld later apologized to Sakon. [one]
Yamamoto finished the season decisively and finished three times in a row, improving his form after a descent in the first four Grand Prix. He also set the seventh fastest lap and the fastest second time in the second sector at the 2006 Brazil Grand Prix . [2] However, this was not enough and Anthony Davidson took his place for the 2007 season. However, he became a Super Aguri test driver. [3] He combined this with performance in the 2007 GP2 season for the BCN Competicion team. [four]
2007: Spyker F1
With the dismissal of Christian Albers from the Spyker F1 team after the 2007 British Grand Prix, his place on the starting grid was vacated. On July 26, 2007, "after Markus Winkelhok took part in the 2007 European Grand Prix , Spyker confirmed that Yamamoto was signed from Super Aguri for the remainder of the 2007 Formula 1 season . [5] During his first Grand Prix for Spyker in Hungary , he came off on the fourth lap due to a crash, after which he finished in all races in the last position, excluding the Japanese Grand Prix , where he finished ahead of Jarno Trulli , and the Brazilian Grand Prix , where Giancarlo Fisichella crashed into him in the first laps of the race. After the 2007 season, the team was sold to Indian entrepreneurs The owner, Vijay Malia , was named Force India in 2008. The new team continued to perform on Spyker’s Yamamoto partner Adrian Sutil . Yamamoto himself was not signed, he was replaced by Giancarlo Fisichella.
Renault F1
On February 4, 2007, it was announced that Sakon had become one of the test pilots for the ING Renault F1 [6] . But according to a press release, he will participate only in street shows, and not in tests on the tracks, in contrast to Lukas Di Grassi and Romain Grosjean , who were announced at the presentation of the Renault R28 . Sanho Human Service sponsored Spyker F1 when Yamamoto was announced as a pilot, and when the R28 was presented, Sanho Human Service sponsored Renault [ what? ] . Sanho is Sakon's personal sponsor. [ when? ] .
Return to GP2
Yamamoto returned to the GP2 series in the second half of the 2008 season for the ART Grand Prix team, which replaced Sakon with Luka Filippi , who showed not the most worthy results. [7] The finish in fourth place in the Hungaroring sprint, became for him the first finish in points in the racing series outside of Japan.
Yamamoto retained his place in ART in the 2008–2009 GP2 Asia season , where he hoped to repeat the success of Romain Grosjean, who won the championship debut season with this team. However, he was in the shadow of teammates Nico Hulkenberg and Pastor Maldonado , but was able to secure a ninth place for the season, with a podium in the first race in Shanghai .
Hispania Racing F1 Team (HRT)
On the eve of the 2010 Chinese Grand Prix, Sakon Yamamoto signed a third pilot contract with the Spanish team Hispania Racing F1 Team [8] , which debuted in F1 in the 2010 season and used the almost uncompetitive HRT F110 car developed by the Italian company Dallara . Due to the difficult financial situation, the team was unable to sign a single experienced rider ( Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok - F-1 debutants), who could help with the finishing of the car [9] . Therefore, team leader Colin Kolles announced his intention to invite an experienced pilot as the third pilot at Friday's training sessions. In the press were called the names of the test pilot Scuderia Ferrari Giancarlo Fisichella , ex-pilot Jaguar and Red Bull Christian Klin , ex-pilot Williams Kazuki Nakajima and 1997 world champion Jacques Villeneuve . (The last two were very close to returning to the World Cup in 2010, but the Serbian team Stefan Grand Prix , which they were supposed to represent, did not debut as a result). As a result, the choice of Kolles fell on Yamamoto's rent-driver , who has much less experience and is able to bring big sponsorship money to the team.
Marussia Virgin Racing
Since the beginning of the 2011 season, Sakon has been the backup pilot for the Marussia Virgin Racing team .
