History
The settlement, from which the city later grew, was founded on January 1, 1848 [1] .
Geographical position
The city is located in the northern part of the department, within the Caribbean lowland , on the left bank of the Magdalena River , approximately 60 kilometers east-southeast (ESE) from the city of Cartagena , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 5 meters above sea level [2] . The municipality of Kalamar borders in the northwest with the territories of the municipalities of San Cristobal and Soplaviento , in the west with the municipalities of Maates and Arroyoondo , in the south with the municipalities of San Juan Nepomuseno and El Guamo , in the southeast with the territory of the Magdalena department, in the north and northeast - with the territory of the Atlantic department. The area of the municipality is 246 km² [1] .
Population
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics of Colombia, the total population of the city and municipality in 2015 was 23 308 people [3] . The dynamics of the population of the municipality by years:

According to the 2005 census, men made up 51.9% of the Kalamar population, women - 48.1%, respectively. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 63.3% of the city's population; Negroes , mulattoes and Raysals - 36.6%; Indians - 0.1% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 79.1%.
Economics
The basis of the economy of Kalamar is agriculture and river trade [1] .
45.9% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 41.6% are service enterprises, 6.5% are industrial enterprises, 6% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
Transport
National Highway 25 passes through the city ( Spanish: Ruta Nacional 25 ).
