The plot of the work is a spin-off to the visual novel Fate / stay night and tells about the events in virtual reality created using a supercomputer on the surface of the moon in order to recreate the competition between the magicians of the “Holy Grail War” in 2030 . Fate / Extra gameplay consists of battles between heroic personalities called by magicians, called “servants,” which occur once in a game week. The combat system is a step-by-step compilation by opponents of combinations of actions that are based on the principle of non-transitive game balance and are compared with each other in the active phase of the battle. .
On the basis of the original game in 2013, the Fate / Extra CCC spin-off was developed, developed on the same gaming platform and describing an alternative development of the original source. Fate / Extra CCC managed to become one of the two best-selling games on the PlayStation Portable platform in 2013 and get an additional edition from Sony Computer Entertainment . In 2015, based on its setting , the action- game Fate / Extella: The Umbral Star was released. .
Fate / Extra and Fate / Extra CCC in versions of the story with Nero as a servant received a manga- adaptation from the Robi〜na manga , published in the journal Comptiq , and Takenoko Seizin based on the Tamamo no Noe storyline arch illustrated the Fate / Extra CCC manga FoxTail published in Comp Ace magazine . In 2018, anime series Fate / Extra Last Encore , created by Shaft studio director Akiyuki Simbo, was shown on various TV channels in Japan. .
Gameplay
Fate / Extra is a single - player three - dimensional Japanese role-playing game in a dungeon subgenre [1] . The game features two large locations : the Arena, in which battles with computer opponents take place, and the Academy, where the storyline develops [2] .
During the battles, the player, called the "Master" ( English Master ), leads the character , called the "Servant" ( English Servant ), and seeks to bring the opponent's health points to zero [3] . Battles take place in the form of isolated in-game events with a single opponent, which can be either a dweller or another servant. A fight consists of separate sections, and before each of them begins, the master is asked to select a sequence of six actions of his servant on the playing field. At the same time, the enemy establishes its own combination of actions. There are three main types of interaction: “Attack” ( English Attack ), “Protection” ( English Guard ) and “Break” ( English Break ). By analogy with the game " stone, scissors, paper " after the series of actions chosen by the opponents, they are compared, as a result of which damage is dealt to the losing side [4] . In the case of three consecutive successful actions ( eng. Chain ), the character is given an additional attack that does not meet the resistance of the enemy [5] . In addition to the main interactions, servant characters have special types of attacks and superpicks, called “Noble phantasms” ( eng. Noble Phantasm ), which require the expenditure of points of magical energy [6] . The master during the battle can support his servant with the help of permanent effects of items acquired in the in-game store and obtained during the plot, as well as the use of “code cast” ( Code Cast ) - magic that enhances certain characteristics of the servants [6] .
The arena is a dungeon filled with aggressive computer opponents, for the destruction of which the player gains experience points and in-game currency [6] . During one game week, the player is offered two mandatory quests consisting in finding objects on the territory of Arena levels [5] . In the case of performing these missions within the prescribed period, the player is allowed to battle with an enemy's servant, controlled by artificial intelligence, assigned to his opponents at the beginning of the week. When a certain number of battles are held with a certain type of opponents, the player gets the opportunity to see part of the opponent’s actions combination before choosing his own series of moves. In the case of servants during the game week, it is possible to collect information about the enemy through observation and interaction with his master at the Academy [7] . Also, on the territory of the Academy, servants' parameters are improved for accumulated experience points and it is possible to purchase various items for in-game currency [1] .
The Fate / Extra dialogue system is built by analogy with the genre of visual novels , in which there is an extensive system for selecting replicas that influence the further development of the plot or relations with his own servant [7] . The main narration is also conducted through the textual information offered to the player, located between the stages of the active gameplay [7] . In the case of non-fulfillment of quests or defeat of a servant in the Arena, the game ends with a “bad ending”, that is, the death of the chosen master and zeroing of the entire previous passage [4] .
Story
Original Game
The events of Fate / Extra unfold in 2030 at the artificial lunar base "Academy Tsukumihara" ( Jap. 海原 海原 学園 Tsukumihara Gakuen ) , where through the use of a supercomputer , an attempt was made to recreate the contest between the magicians - "The Holy Grail War" ( Jap. 聖杯 戦 争 Seyei Se :) [6] .
One of the students named Hakuno Kisinami discovers that strange events occur around him - some students behave as if performing a limited role, and some show superhuman abilities [4] . Hakuno decides to follow one of the strangely behaving pupils and discovers a room on the campus where several students have been killed. During the inspection of this place, he is attacked and seriously injures an unexpectedly revived effigy [4] . Bleeding profusely, the protagonist decides to by no means give up and try to break the strange chain of events, which calls on his side a heroic person who destroys the animated dummy and saves Hakuno. When he came to the hospital, the protagonist finds out that he was embroiled in the Holy Grail War and was recognized as a master ( English Master ), who was provided with a “servant” ( English Servant ) who saved his life with the help of a supercomputer [2] . The servants themselves are materialized spirits of mythological or legendary personalities, who were distributed according to their lifetime skills to one of seven classes. The goal of the war is to eliminate all other heroes called for the possibility of calling the Holy Grail , capable of fulfilling any desire of the winner [2] .
Next, the protagonist finds out that all previous events were a preliminary stage for the selection of masters, which 128 magician participants were able to overcome. In addition to the mages, all the other characters turned out to be NPCs with a supercomputer-defined behavior and strictly defined functions for interacting with living people [4] . From the curator of the war, Kotomine Kirei ( Jap. 言 峰 綺 礼 ) and the magician Tosaki Rin ( Jap. 遠 坂 Х ), Hakuno finds out that in order to win the competition, he must win seven consecutive victories over randomly determined computer opponents, and in case he defeats his own servant, he will end his life not only in this virtual reality , but also in the real world [8] . Kisinami also notes that he is the only one of all the magicians who has no memories of Tsukumihara, and, fighting in the war, tries to find out the truth about his past [9] .
After defeating the seven masters, Hakuno learns that at the end of the 20th century, life on Earth came to stagnation and its magical resources were exhausted, and this war itself was started as a ritual to make up for these losses and try to give humanity a new chance [6] . Approaching the Holy Grail, the protagonist encounters resistance from Dr. Tways Peesman ( born Twice H. Pieceman ), who seeks to convince the hero to use the Holy Grail to save humanity, but receives a sharp refusal from him [10] . It turns out that Twais is an NPC who received the status of a master and Buddha Shakyamuni as a servant. During the final battle, the servant Hakuno triumphs and gives his master the opportunity to learn about his true identity with the help of the Grail [10] .
CCC
Fate / Extra CCC is an alternative development of the original game, in which the Academy Tsukumihara after the start of the Holy Grail War is under attack by the Shadow destroying the Masters and NPCs [11] . Trying to escape from danger, Khakuno Kisinami loses consciousness, after which she comes to herself in the first-aid post in the changed academy building and notices that nurse Mato Sakura is caring for him ( Jap. 桐 桜 ) [12] . It turns out that the protagonist, along with some masters, fell into an imaginary space located on the back of the moon and used to store information that is harmful for a supercomputer from which they are trying to escape [11] . After some time, it becomes known that behind all events there is a backup copy created on the basis of Matou Sakura - BB ( Jap. ビ ィ ビ ィ BBC ) , the goal of which is to save Khakuno from being killed in a war [13] . Ultimately, BB unites with the hero to confront Kiare Sesshoin ( Jap. 殺生 院 キ ア ラ ) , who decided to use the Grail to save people [14] . After the victory over Kiara, Hakuno returns to the Tsukumihara Academy [11] .
Last Encore
The plot of Fate / Extra Last Encore is an actual continuation of the events of the main game, subject to the loss of the final battle to Tvays Pisman and his servant [15] . Hakuno Kisinami once again finds herself in the Tsukumihara Academy, in which the supercomputer system began sweeping up all life [16] . Having received a serious wound in the fight with another master for the opportunity to escape, the main character calls on his side the servant Saber, with whom he goes to the Holy Grail. As in the original game, Hakuno initially has no memories of the past and does not know the principles of the Holy Grail War. During his wanderings, it turns out that after losing the previous one, Khakuno Kisinami, who was a girl, had already passed almost a thousand years, and the whole world created by the supercomputer had undergone significant changes - it was divided into eight levels, each of which had its own master with a servant. Due to the danger of battles and the risk of death, most of the craftsmen gave up their rights and began to live peacefully on a lower level, selling their servants. On the lower level, Tohsaka Rin joins the hero and Saber [15] .
Conquering the masters of the levels, each of whom fought the main character in Fate / Extra , Hakuno gradually approaches the Holy Grail and restores the memory of the previous Hakuno Kisinami [17] . It also turns out that the process of self-destruction of the supercomputer began, and soon the entire virtual reality can be destroyed along with the ability to fulfill the desire with the help of the Grail. Having reached the top, the protagonist and Saber defeat Twisa Peesman, who no longer saw the development of humanity and accepted his impending doom. Hakuno gives the right to be a winner in the Tohsaka Rin War, which fulfills a desire with the help of the Grail [17] .

Hakuno Kisinami ( Jap. 岸 波 白 野 Kisinami Hakuno ) is the protagonist. In the course of the events, Fate / Extra is a self-conscious NPC who has managed to take a place in the Holy Grail War of the master who accidentally died before it began. The prototype of Hakuno before being introduced into the supercomputer is a person frozen in a cryochamber , suffering from complete memory loss [18] . In Fate / Extra Last Encore, Kisinami is reborn as the “face of death” (the English Dead Face ) - an entity that absorbed the hatred of those killed in the Holy Grail War and unable to experience positive emotions [16] . After contact with the Holy Grail, Hakuno is recognized as a software error and is erased by the supercomputer in the original game and in the anime adaptation [19] .

Development
Project Approval
For the first time, Nino Kazuya, the producer of a future role-playing project, learned about the existence of a dojin type- moon group by familiarizing himself with Tsukihime’s visual novel . In 2005, he joined the new company Imageepoch and received from his CEO Mikagi Ruei an indication of the need to create a joint project with Type-Moon, which completed commercialization [27] . Soon Kazuya contacted the leaders of the former dojin circle - Kinoko Nasu and Takashi Takeuchi - and put forward a proposal for cooperation on the development of a computer game in the setting of the fictional universe Fate , which, according to the producer, was attractive for implementation in various genres [28] . At that time, the Type-Moon team was involved in the final stage of the work on the visual novel Fate / hollow ataraxia , and also had short-term plans for the development of other projects, which is why Kinoko Nasu was forced to refuse the producer [27] .
Despite the failure, Kazuya did not abandon the idea of creating a new game and in 2007 prepared a more detailed proposal: the genre of the future product was to become a console Japanese role-playing game , the plot would be a fundamentally new Holy Grail War, not related to the events of the ancestor of the series - Fate visual novel / stay night [28] . The basis of the center line of the work was chosen themes of the near future with a scene on the surface of the Moon , which was previously briefly mentioned by Kinoko Nas as an element of the setting of the Tsukihime series of games; in addition, it was planned to introduce a supercomputer controlling the work of the Holy Grail, with the world of virtual reality , in which history protagonists would be placed [29] .
Due to the peculiarities of the setting, Kazuya decided to make a role-playing game with a large amount of textual information, similar to the usual for fans of a series of visual novels [30] . Considering the important graphical aspect of future work, the producer made a choice in favor of three-dimensional graphics and a seamless transfer of plans from a third party [31] . In order to contrast the product with the rest of the Fate franchise, Kazuya invited a third-party artist working under the pseudonym Vadarko to design the characters, despite the fact that Takashi Takeuchi always played this role in all previous Type-Moon games [28] . For the presentation of the project, Vadarko was commissioned to create, on the basis of the image of the Fate / stay night heroine, Saber of a seemingly similar character to provoke the audience [22] , retaining about “30% of the original design” [26] . Additionally, the producer indicated to the illustrator information on the subject of virtual reality and reported that the Roman Emperor Nero should become the historical prototype of the heroine [26] . The original sketch, made by the artist in imitation of Takeuti style, was rejected, and Kazuya insisted on portraying the character in Vadarko’s own style without unnecessary detailing of the elements [22] .
At the time of receiving a new offer from Kazui, Type-Moon leaders planned to halt the expansion of the Fate franchise and move to the development of fundamentally new projects on the plot [32] . However, even during the creation of Fate / stay night, they considered the possibility of developing a role-playing game based on this visual novel, since from childhood they were fans of this genre and considered the elements of the Fate universe setting suitable for such a project [32] . For this reason, Nasu and Takeuchi met with approval, especially due to the spin-off status of the original game, rather than a new transfer to a different format [28] .
Practical implementation
After approving the concept of the future game, Kazuya shared the responsibilities between the two developers: Type-Moon focused on creating the script of the game, which took over the main screenwriter Kinoko Nasu, and character design under the control of Takashi Takeuchi, and Imageepoch on the practical implementation of the project and creating game a mechanic assigned to the head of programming, Suetsu Kadovaki, despite his employment in other projects [28] . The producer himself reserved the connection between the creators and the control over individual plot moves [33] .
In Imageepoch, there were various ideas on the implementation of game mechanics, such as building the gameplay of battle scenes by analogy with representatives of fighting games , as well as a complex system of non-transitive balance consisting of six different characters' actions [33] . Unlike other representatives of the Fate franchise, not only attacking, but also defensive skills were developed for each character, because the developers considered it necessary “not only to reduce the opponent’s health points , but also to preserve their own ways” [30] in order to keep the player’s attention in the game [28] . However, in the end, Kazuya and Kadovaki decided to use mechanics similar to the game “ stone, scissors, paper ”, and, realizing that this primitive move would not cause much interest among the audience, they decided to oppose him with a developed system of collecting information about the enemy, significantly improving the chances of winning fights and presented in the form of in-game events [33] , by analogy with the gradually filling up data screen of the servants' status in Fate / stay night [28] . For this reason, much more attention was paid to the development of the characters of individual characters and the overall development of the plot instead of focusing on the game aspects [33] . It was intended to use unique joint actions in the battle mode for various combinations of masters and servants, which, however, was not implemented in the final draft [34] .
By decision of the producer in the game, it was necessary to present three player-selectable servants (Saber, Archer and Custer), differing in different skills and character, which should, according to his plan, serve as a kind of "difficulty levels" increasing from Saber to Caster [28 ] . Despite the declared independence of the story, the concept of minor characters in the story was based on the similarities with the characters of Fate / stay night , some of which were given the same names as in the visual novel, however, according to the developers, all their characters and histories were not identical their prototypes [36] . In order to emphasize this, some of them (for example, Toshake Rin) were asked to change the kanji in spelling of names, which, however, was not realized in the end [26] . For the first time since Sasaki Kojiro was used as a servant in Fate / stay night Kinoko Nasu, the ban on introducing Far Eastern characters as servants to the plot was lifted, thanks to which Lu Bu and Li Shuven were introduced to the game [28] .
Initially, Kinoko Nasu doubted the possibility of realizing Nero’s personality as the basis for Saber’s heroine, and the creators considered other versions of the character’s prototype [28] . However, the initial choice was left unchanged, but the character of the character was radically changed towards a great care of his surroundings and focus on the romantic love theme [36] , which was developed as a wedding dress for her in one of the game events [28 ] . The second character to choose was Archer from Fate / stay night , with Kazuya and Vadarko deciding to preserve his character and appearance, believing that this hero “should always look cool”, visually increasing his masculinity [22] . The greatest difficulty was caused by the choice of the third character, Caster, because Kazuya proposed performing it as an adult woman with animal ears [28] . The original design of the heroine was designed by Takashi Takeuchi as a mixture of Japanese costume and Chinese traditional Hanfu clothing; The facial features and hairstyle were created under the impression of Yoko's character from the anime series Gurren-Lagann , and it was decided to choose the Titsamo-no-mae kitsune for this role [26] .
According to Takeuchi, Kazuei personally conducted the development of the central storyline of the game, and Nasu was only engaged in translating his ideas into text [37] . Compared with the previous products of the franchise, a new servant class was added - Saver ( Saver from English - “Savior”), whose true personality was decided to be based on the Buddha Shakyamuni as the final boss and protector of the Grail [38] . After the release of the game, the producer noted that he was not able to concentrate enough on the dramatic aspects of the plot, which was why Nasu focused on school everyday scenes [33] . The setting of the scriptwriter’s decision turned out to be executed as a capitalist utopia stagnant, and the aim of the ongoing Holy Grail War was to select masters for using the properties of the artifact for the common good, rather than fulfillment of personal goals, as in Fate / stay night [39] .
The choice of a voice actor for character dubbing was made by Nasu, Takeuchi and Kazuei, and the same cast was approved for the role of heroes whose prototypes participated in Type-Moon's previous work [28] . Saber was entrusted with the role of Sakura Tanghe , previously known for dubbing the main heroine of the anime Cardcaptor Sakura , despite the fact that in her previous works she appeared in the type of younger sisters, but not rulers. Because of this, Tanghe was forced to use a lower timbre of her voice, and also consulted with Saber in Fate / stay night Ayako Kawasumi about the features of the stage transfer of the character of such heroines [40] .
Release
The upcoming release of the game was first announced in the September issue of Famitsu magazine in 2009 [41] , and later it was also reported that the new project is a spin-off to the main works of the franchise - Fate / stay night and Fate / Zero - and is only being developed for the platform PlayStation Portable [42] . October 16 of the same year, the publisher of Marvelous Entertainment announced that the release is scheduled for March 18, 2010 [43] , but on January 28, he postponed this date for an indefinite period, explaining this move with the need to “improve product quality” [44] . The final release of the game took place on July 22, 2010 [45] . During the first week of sales, more than 72 thousand copies of Fate / Extra were sold, which allowed it to become the second highest-priced console game in Japan at that time, second only to the Wii Party [46] .
In July 2011, the upcoming localization of the game in English for the North American region was reported, which was officially released by Aksys Games November 1 of the same year in a limited, including artbook and soundtrack , and a standard edition, as well as in the downloadable version for the PlayStation Network [47] . May 4, 2012 in the same configuration Fate / Extra was released on the territory of the European Union by the publisher Ghostlight [48] .
The scene also featured the scene in which Saber, depicted in Tibi- style and dressed in a Santa Claus costume , sang a parody of the song “ Jingle Bells ” in Japanese [49] . Because of the lyrics of the song, this parody was nicknamed “Padoru padoru!” By the fans [49] . The group of Internet users decided to post this fragment on YouTube in the form of a looped hour-long video clip , which soon gained popularity and spread in the late 2010s as an Internet meme , timed to the Catholic Christmas [49] .
Fate / Extra CCC
Even during the development of the original game, the producer of the project Nino Kazuey proposed the idea of creating a plot, in the center of which would be placed the side heroine Sakura Mato ( Jap. 間 桐 桜 Mato: Sakura ) , who played one of the main roles in Fate / stay night [30 ] . Later, Kinoko Nasu held this idea when, against the background of Fate / Extra’s success, it was decided to create a continuation of this part of the Fate franchise [32] . The project was named Fate / Extra CCC [51] .
By analogy with Fate / hollow ataraxia Nasu considered the new work not as an independent high-grade product, but only as a plot addition to the original Fate / Extra [52] . At the insistence of Takashi Takeuchi The scriptwriter was encouraged to include numerous references to other Type-Moon works released by that time. Given the verbose style of Nasu himself and his desire to create a story in the seinen genre, this resulted in a large size of the text of the script (more than 1 megabyte) [52] . Such a volume corresponded to full-fledged visual novels, previously produced by the company, and not to subtitles for a role-playing game, but in the end, the full text by Takeuchi’s decision was kept as a feature of the author’s works [32] . Later, Nasu noted that with the release of the Fate / Extra CCC, he finally managed to realize all the ideas that he had at the time of the start of work on the Fate franchise in the early 2000s [52] .
As characters writer in the plot included three artificial incarnation Mato Sakura - BB ( . Jap ビィビィ BB) Passion Lip ( . Jap パッションリップ Passon Rip) and Meltlilit ( Jap. メルトリリス Merutoririsu) formed in Etty -stilistike [53] . Among the selectable servants in the game, at the suggestion of Takashi Takeuchi, Gilgamesh , known for the main works of the franchise ( Fate / stay night and Fate / Zero ) [32] , was added as a classless hero because Nasu did not consider it necessary to try put this already developed character into the Fate / Extra servant system. Gilgamesh was also presented as a positive character, despite the status of the antagonist in the main series [52] . Among other servants, Karna was introduced into Fate / Extra CCC, which was used in Fate / Apocrypha , which was preparing for publication at that time, because Nasu liked the resulting image of the character of that project [52] .
By the end of the summer of 2011, Nasu had completed the preliminary scenario of the future sequel , after which the character design was designed, and in the winter of the same year, the development of the program code for the game began. Compared to Fate / Extra , the composition of the Imageepoch programmer group has been changed who conducted the development of the project, and they were given a complicated technical task for the future game [52] . Nevertheless, the basic principles of the gameplay in the form of a dungeon with bosses distributed over several levels were preserved, but the overall difficulty of passing was reduced by reducing the number of bad endings [52] .
The work was considered by developers solely as a project for fans, and therefore the number of fan-service content with female characters was increased [52] . Also, the game “Secret Garden” was added to the game with erotic images of characters performed on the verge of CERO norms for console games , and the designer Vadarko was given the task to pay more attention to transferring large sizes of female characters and performing more explicit models of the costumes of all the characters [53 ] . Initially, eroticism was assumed to be the central storyline of the work, but in the end it was transformed, according to Nasu, into a “romantic story of the battle of female characters” [52] . Since the setting of the school in Fate / Extra CCC was changed from a modern building to a wooden structure, Vadarko decided to use the classical Japanese school uniform (sailor suit and gakuran) instead of the design adopted in the predecessor game, to more accurately convey a different atmosphere of the new work [53] .
On September 8, 2011, the public was officially announced the release of the future project in spring 2012 [51] , but Type-Moon's management soon revised the timeline for the new project, and its practical implementation was postponed until the release of the visual novel Mahoutsukai no Yoru in order not to divide the attention of the staff between the two works. The new date was set for the winter of 2012, and it was also reported that the project budget was increased by raising funds from Marvelous Entertainment [54] . In December, the release was again postponed until March 2013 due to “the need to debug the quality of work” [55] . The new game officially went on sale on March 28, 2013 in Japan [56] , and by April 22, 110 thousand of its copies were sold, which was a record in terms of sales for such a period throughout the franchise [57] . In January 2014, the Asian branch of Sony Computer Entertainment released the additional edition Fate / Extra CCC and Samurai Warriors 3 , as the two best-selling games for the PlayStation Portable in 2013 in Japan [58] . Despite this commercial success, Fate / Extra CCC became one of the latest projects for Imageepoch, which committed bankruptcy in 2015 [59] .
The Fate / Extra CCC events formed the basis of the spin-off - action- game Fate / Extella: The Umbral Star , released by Marvelous Entertainment in 2016 on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita platforms in Japan and later in other countries [60] .
Manga
On the basis of Fate / Extra and Fate / Extra CCC , several manga adaptations were produced that were produced in various divisions of Kadokawa Shoten . September 26, 2011 entered the sale in the magazine Comptiq the first tankone of the manga Fate / Extra manga by Robi〜na [61] . The work was an adaptation of the storyline with a male protagonist and Saber as a servant. A total of 6 tank tanks were released, the last of which was published on November 10, 2014, and on its cover the illustrator made a mistake that went into circulation and consisted of six fingers on one of Saber's hands [62] . Starting from June 2015, the publication of the new work of Robi〜na - Fate / Extra CCC , also based on the storyline of the heroine Saber in the same game [63] , began in the same magazine.
Since, in addition to Nero, there were other central servant characters in the Fate / Extra series, Takashi Takeuchi together with Marvelous Entertainment It was decided to create an additional series of manga. The CEO of Type-Moon found it more promising to reveal Tamamo-no-mae's character in the setting of the Fate universe and in 2013 offered the novice mangaque Takenoko Seizin make your own adaptation of Fate / Extra CCC [64] . Up to this point, Seizin was engaged exclusively in creating hentai manga [65] , but despite this, he immediately agreed to start work, because he wanted to try his hand at creating full-fledged storylines for the characters of the large franchise [64] . Mangaka decided to focus on the confrontation between Tamamo no Mae and the goddess Amaterasu , as well as other elements of the story included in the works of Kinoko Nasu according to the scenario of the game, but not included in its final version [64] . Since the character Kitsune was chosen as the main character, the work was named Fate / Extra CCC FoxTail [65] . Due to his lack of experience, Seijin, by his own admission, experienced difficulties in depicting battle scenes and focused on their more thorough transmission, in particular, he tried to use the full volume of the comic window, filling the empty space with visual effects and onomatopeeia (which included not only the katakana used by other authors, but also kanji ), and also used frequent scaling changes of plans and transitions of light and shadow to facilitate the perception of work by readers. The abilities of Tamamo no Mae and other characters were drawn by Mangaka from traditional Japanese mythology [64] . The first tankoon of the series went on sale on October 26, 2013 from Comp Ace magazine and included an additional chapter as a spin-off to the main story [66] .
Anime
At Type-Moon , according to Kinoko Nasu, already at the time of the release of the original game in 2011, there were plans for a possible adaptation in an anime series format [16] . They acquired a more specific form only in 2013 during the development of the Fate / Extra CCC , for which the introductory screensaver was prepared and removed by Shaft [67] . The choice of this anime studio for this work was dictated by its use of an avant-garde approach to the image, which, in the opinion of Type-Moon management, was well suited to the style of the Fate / Extra series [52] . Customers were satisfied with the result, and a preliminary agreement was reached with Shaft on a future film adaptation, which was immediately transferred to the rank of a long-term perspective due to the busy studio schedule [16] .
At the beginning of 2016, recruitment began for future work: Akiyuki Simbau , known for adapting the Monogatari and Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica series, was approved for the painting director position, the transfer of character design was entrusted to Hiroka Yamamure and Masaaki Takiyame [68] . The role of the scriptwriter went to the author of the original game Kinoko Nas [69] . Initially, he had several options for the future nature of adaptation, including the use of Tamamo-no mae as the main character and the direct transcription of the game scenario [16] , but later he decided to create an original work that would complete the whole Fate / Extra cycle. for this reason, it was named Fate / Extra Last Encore (from English - “Fate / Addition Last Encore”) [70] . There were no restrictions on the part of the producers before Nasu, since guarantees were given for any required work budget [16] . In the future scenarios, Nasu decided to use all the main characters of the original source, placed in the new conditions of the war of survival, which by that time had lasted for a thousand years relative to the original Fate / Extra . Compared to the scenario of the game, the author decided to pay more attention to the reflections of the main character about his own goals and place in this world, and Saber chose the role of the main character [70] . Nasu's assistant on screenplay was Hikaru Sakurai - Author of the Fate / Prototype: Sougin no Fragments [71] .
On March 27, 2016, the upcoming release of the series was officially announced next year [72] . In the summer of 2017, the studio announced the activation of the original composition of the seiyu game and that the premiere will take place “next winter” [73] . As a result, the television show started at midnight on January 28, 2018 on the Gunma TV channels , BS11 , Tochigi TV , Tokyo MX and MBS TV and also from January 30 in the Netflix online service [74] . In the period up to April 1, 2018, 10 episodes of film adaptation with an unfinished main storyline were shown, the creators decided to show the rest of the story to the public from July 29 to August 5 of the same year on the same TV channels, except for MBS TV. The first part of Fate / Extra Last Encore received at that period the additional name Oblitus Heliocentrism (from the English - “Forgotten Heliocentrism ”), the second - the Illustrias Geocentrism (from the English - “Glorified geocentrism ”) [75] . Before the release of the final series, Kinoko Nasu apologized to viewers for the resulting “difficult to understand dialogues” in the picture and asked them to concentrate as much as possible while watching [76] .
On July 18, the series was released on DVD [77] and Blu-ray Disc , the latest edition being the second in sales in the first week of August among all of Japan’s animated products, second only to the movie “ Mystery Coco ” [78] . In other languages, the series was broadcast from June 30, 2018 in the online service Netflix [79] .
Music and Radio
The musical accompaniment of the original game was prepared by composer Shinji Josoe , known for various works for the gaming company Namco [80] . The thematic song of the game Fate / Extra , dubbed “Ranse Eroica”, was written by composer Mikiya Katakura and performed by the band Ali Project , which released it as their own single [81] . However, the Fate / Extra CCC soundtrack was already written by Type-Moon staff [57] , and the opening and closing sequel compositions, called “Sakura Meikyuu” and “Blossom.”, Were performed by Canon Vakeshima and Sakura Tange respectively and are presented in 2012 at the event Machi asobi organized by ufotable [82] .
From 2013 to 2016, the record label Sound Drama Fate / EXTRA was released by the recording company HOBiRECORDS, the script to which was written by Kento Kujo. A total of four collections of CD -adaptation discs were published, the plot of which was built on the original game with the male protagonist and Saber as a servant, and also included its own additional scenes [83] . On January 24, 2014, the same company published a radio show Fate / EXTRA CCC Runatik Kusuteshon 2013 on the game Fate / Extra CCC , which also contained six character songs performed by a seyyu female characters of the story, texts of which were written by Mai Kadovaki [84] . From July 22, 2013 to December 19, 2014, the Fate / EXTRA Tsukumihara Gakuen Housoubu Internet radio show was broadcast with ayyu Atsushi Abe (Hakuno Kisinami) and Sakura Tange (Saber), released at various intervals on several Internet channels, including Type-Moon . A total of 18 issues were made, which consisted of interviews with other actors playing the game as invited guests, which were subsequently published on a CD in 2015 [83] .
By order of the studio Shaft, the music of the anime Fate / Extra Last Encore was performed by the composer Satoru Kosaki known for creating the soundtrack for the TV series “ Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya ”, Lucky Star and Bakemonogatari [85] . The opening composition of the film was the song "Bright Burning Shout", sung by Takanori Nishikawa on the words of Tomoy Tabuti [86] , closing - “Tsuki to hanataba” from singer Sayuri [87] . Both music tracks were released by singers as singles in January 2018 [86] [87] . From June to August 2018, the Fate / EXTRA Last Encore Web Rajio Internet radio shows were broadcast with Atsushi Abe's voice [88] .

Fate / Extra received low marks from critics who viewed it as a work at the intersection of genres of Japanese role-playing games and visual novels [4] [6] [91] . The main advantage of the reviewers was the plot content, which was regarded as representing the greatest interest for the player and keeping him in the game [2] [3] [4] [6] [7] . In the same context, they pointed out the high quality of the text itself [2] [3] [5] [9] [92] , which, according to Dark Zero observer Dominic Schird, was reminiscent of the game Lost Odyssey [3] . Nevertheless, Heidi Kemps in a review for GamePro noted that, as in the case of other works of Kinoko Nasu , the presentation in a number of points was somewhat drawn out, and the manner in which the characters' thoughts were conveyed was more in line with the traditions of visual novels [92] . Other critics also gave analogies with this genre, highlighting the presence of a system of triggered events through game choices [6] [7] ; relationship points between characters [7] , as well as absolute plot deadlocks, which are uncharacteristic for role-playing games [91] , and a large number of sudden bad endings that resulted in the character’s death [2] [92] . Browser of The Digital Fix Lewis Brown considered these elements of visual novels as successfully implemented, but noted that the story would have won if it had a more dramatic component , rather than everyday school life [2] .
The presence of three different available to the choice of "servants" was evaluated positively with their disclosure as characters [4] [5] [9] and, according to some reviewers, contributed to encouraging the player to repeat the game [2] [3] . However, the need for the “New Game +” mode, in the opinion of Shiva Stella from GameSpot , was controversial due to the immutability of the main plot [6] . Brad Galloway from the Gaming Union Internet portal noted that, despite not the most original plot of the plot through the memory loss of the main character and its gradual recovery, its consequences were realized with unusual development for the genre, since the discovery of facts from the past of the protagonist had not only advantages, but also minuses [7] [9] . Lewis Brown singled out the successful use of furigans in the game, including in the localized English version, which added semantic nuances to the dialogue part [2] . The critics received a high assessment of the system for collecting information about enemy servants, which directly influenced the course of the battles by its results, determining the tactics of the battle [1] [4] [7] [9] [91] , which, according to Zack Welhhouse of RPGamer , its atmosphere was reminiscent of the novels The Hunger Games and The Battle of the King [9] . Welhouse also noted the lack of understanding of the events taking place on the part of the main characters, all the motivations of which came down to taking on trust the obligations imposed, which were why they called them “similar to mannequins ” [9] . In the opinion of the reviewers, the prologue of the game was unnecessarily stretched due to the long unlocking of the elements of the gameplay and almost an hour of waiting for the transition to the choice of character [2] [3] [4] .
Positive feedback has also received an audio-visual component of the game. For example, GameZone critic Stephanie Carmichael pointed out that the character sprites appearing in the dialog box performed well and contributed to defusing the atmosphere after the battles [5] . Among other successful aspects for the PlayStation Portable level, reviewers noted the overall character design presented in the anime style [3] [4] [92] , seamless third-person camera transitions when watching characters [5] [9] and the mode design "Arena" by the standards of Japanese role-playing games [2] . Despite this, Dominic Shird pointed out that developers had to create a more diverse graphic design of dungeons than constantly using shades of blue [3] ; Zack Welhouse also singled out the same type of monster design [9] . In addition, some critics noted that character models were made with insufficient use of anti-aliasing [6] [91] . The musical accompaniment received positive ratings [3] [92] and was awarded a comparison with Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology [7] , however, indicated its lack of diversity [5] and the lack of memory songs [4] [6] . According to critics, dubbing of a seyyu was performed qualitatively and conveyed the characters' emotions even in the absence of a different voice track in a localized version [92] .
Directly, the gameplay of Fate / Extra , as a role-playing game, was subjected to various criticisms by reviewers who noted similarities with Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 [3] [5] [9] [92] , and, according to Zack Welhouse, the game ( in particular, the “Arena” regime managed to absorb the worst aspects of its predecessor [9] . The reviewers noted the extreme simplicity of the non-transitive game balance realized in Fate / Extra , which, in their opinion, was a complete analogue of the game “ stone, scissors, paper ” [1] [4] [9] [91] [92] . Opinions of critics are divided in assessing the demanding mechanics of battles to the player’s skills: in the opinion of some observers, this showed a high value of the game experience gained and gathering information about the enemy (which increased the threshold for entering the game) [2] [3] [6] [91] , however, others considered this factor unimportant because of the presence of high-level opponents of various animation actions and assigned the element of chance to the prevailing role [1] [5] [9] [92] . In the opinion of Stephanie Carmichael, the main problem of the Fate / Extra gameplay was an intuitively difficult system of countering opponents in battle, which could lead to increased demands on each player’s action [5] . The phases of the battles themselves were called “quite interesting, but quickly boring,” because of the slow pace and frequent repetition of opponents [4] [6] [91] . Also among the shortcomings were called the weakness of some opponents [1] [5] [7] , the inability to skip the previously read text [6] and save during the study dungeon [5] [6] , as well as low rewards for passing it [2] [9] . The dungeon itself was recognized as one of the key drawbacks of the game due to the only used card with the same type of design at all levels and was called simply “boring” by some critics [2] [3] [6] [7] . The size of the Fate / Extra world was also regarded as extremely small even for the console role-playing games [1] [91] .
In the opinion of various observers, Fate / Extra unsuccessfully tried to “sit on two chairs” of the role-playing game and the visual novel [2] [6] and would only win if it could only focus on one of the two components [2] [9] [92 ] . According to Heidi Kemps, this could be achieved by reorienting the game to the adventure genre [92] , and Brad Galloway even advised to consider Fate / Extra as a visual novel with a good gameplay for its niche [91] .
Anime Adaptation
The anime critic Teron Martin, in his review for the Anime News Network, lowered the quality of the Fate / Extra Last Encore series, stressing that this work has “little sense even for those who are familiar with the franchise” of viewers [15] . The story moves of the painting were recognized by him as typical of the entire Fate series, which consisted in an intrigue about the true identity of the servants. The motives of the individual characters, who were not opponents of Hakuno and Saber, according to the observer, remained unexplained. Martin admitted that he could recognize this version of Saber as the most attractive character of the series and, perhaps, of the entire franchise, but its complete incompatibility with its historical prototype ( Nero ), with the exception of the love of acting, was unacceptable for criticism [15] .
The visual component of Fate / Extra Last Encore was compared with the previous work of the studio Shaft - the Monogatari franchise, the anime Nisekoi and the Fireworks film, and it was noted that all these works show similar urban landscapes, and in some series the collages resembled stylized versions of the images of the Gekidan illustrators group Inu Curry for Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica [15] . According to Martin, such graphic solutions were attractive to an unprepared viewer, but nothing fundamentally new was presented to connoisseurs of studio creativity. The staging of the battle scenes was also performed qualitatively, but very simply by the sequences of actions of the characters. In the opinion of the critic, the design of the characters was rather accurately conveyed in comparison with the original, retaining all the details, such as the Saber's Clevee suit. The musical accompaniment was also not original, representing a standard combination of electronic themes and full orchestration [15] .
In general, Fate / Extra Last Encore was named by Martin like “a complex game structure, but not a meaningful narrative” [15] .
