The source is in Afghanistan . The food is mostly snowy. The average water discharge near the village of Tagtabazar , which is 486 km from the mouth, is about 52 m³ / s. The average turbidity of water is 4500 g / m³. [one]

Near the city of Mary , the Karakum Canal flows into Murghab. Further, the river is canalized; collectors from the oasis of Mary also flow into it. The collector channel goes to the north-west, where on the border of the Akhal and Mary regions it forms a network of lakes.

On the river are the Tashkeprinsky, Kazyklybentsky, Kolkhozbentsky, Iolotansky, Hindukushsky and Saryyazinsky reservoirs [1] .
