Lear Project

Lear's project is a feasibility study of the mission of a spaceship - probe to the 1I / Oumuamua interstellar object , announced on October 30, 2017 by the Interstellar Research Initiative (i4is) [1] [2] [3] [4] .

Overview

Oumuamua is too fast for all currently existing spaceships [5] , however, the Interstellar Research Initiative (i4is) has explored the potential for sending a space probe to 1I / Oumuamua.

The proposed options for sending a space probe to 'Oumuamua in a period of 5 to 10 years are based on the use of a gravitational maneuver when flying around Jupiter, followed by flying around the Sun at a distance of 3 solar radii to take advantage of the Overt effect [6] [7] .

More advanced options for using a solar sailing , electric and sailing laser engine based on Breakthrough Starshot technology are also being considered.

The problem is that you need to reach the asteroid in the least time (and, therefore, at the minimum possible distance from the Earth), and at the same time be able to get useful scientific information. If the probe is accelerated to too high a speed, it will not be able to enter orbit or land on an asteroid and will simply fly past it, moving at a speed that is many diameters of the asteroid per second. The authors conclude that, despite the complexity of the task, a collision mission could theoretically be possible using existing technologies.
