History
Masse was founded at the beginning of the XI century and named after its owner, Senor Ferte, one of the associates of William the Conqueror . The castle, built in Fert-Mas, was part of the fortification belt, designed to protect the Duchy of Normandy from its neighbors - the kings of France and the dukes of Anjou. After the conquest of Normandy in 1205 by King Philip II Augustus, the city became part of the royal estates. By the 15th century, Ferte Masse had lost its strategic importance, and the local castle was destroyed.
In the XVIII century, the city received a new impetus for development, becoming an important regional center of the textile industry. In 1856, La Ferte Masse tried to get the railway from Paris to Granville on the English Channel , but lost in a dispute with Fleur, and the railway passed through this city, a former rival of La Ferte Mesa. Only 13 years later, a branch was built on La Ferte Masé from Breeze, but this did not save the situation - Fleur won the competition and continued to prosper, unlike La Ferte Masé.
