Alexander Sergeyev Popov ( December 22, 1891 , Shatsk - March 13, 1974 , Alma-Ata ) - a Soviet scientist in the field of mining , specialized in finding the best methods and parameters for the development of coal deposits. Biography

He graduated from the Petrograd Mining Institute (1919), worked at the Moscow Mining Academy at the Department of Mining Art - as an assistant, associate professor, professor (since 1927). After the division of the Moscow State University into several universities - professor, dean, head of department, vice-rector of the Moscow Mining Institute (today - the Mining Institute of NUST “MISiS” ) (1930-1941). Acted as rector of the Moscow State Institute (1937). He also held professorships at the All-Union Industrial Academy and the Moscow Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals and Gold .

In the years 1938-1949. - Professor, Head of the Department of the Central Asian Industrial Institute . Since 1947, the head of the problem, the head of the sector, the deputy director of the Institute of Mining, Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR. Professor, Head of the Department of the Kazakh Polytechnic Institute (1949-1974).

Being a professor-consultant of the mining and surveying bureau, the Scientific and Technical Council of the Supreme Economic Council of the USSR , a number of government commissions for almost fifty years, prof. A.S.Popov advised about 300 various projects. Among them are almost all the coal basins of the country: Donbass, Kuzbass, Podmoskovny, Karaganda, Ural, Spitsbergen, Central Asia, etc., as well as potash deposits. While working in Kazakhstan, he advised on the development of the Baikonur, Kounrd and Dzhezkazgan mines.

The author of 14 monographs on mining. The works are mainly devoted to the problems of opening and development of coal deposits, as well as technical and economic analysis. He was the editor of the mining department of the first edition of the Great Soviet and Technical Encyclopedias.

In 1961, after a stroke, A.S.Popov's right hand was partially paralyzed, as a result of which he began to engage less in science and pay more attention to pedagogical activity and the management of dissertation works. Under his leadership, about a hundred candidate and doctoral dissertations were defended. Among the students of academician A. Popov - Full members of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR Yerzhanov Zh.S. , Saginov A.S. , Kunaev D.A. , Baykonurov O.A. , corresponding members Musin A.Ch. , Bolgozhin Sh. A.G., Altayev Sh.A. , Rakishev B.R. , laureates of the Lenin and State Prizes of the USSR and KazSSR, doctors of sciences Sharipov V.Sh. , Brener V.A., Plyaskin N.I., Mukushev M. , Kim O.V., Beisebaev A.M. and many others.

He died on March 13, 1974 in Alma-Ata.

Recognition

He was awarded the Orders of Lenin , the Red Banner of Labor , and medals. Honored Scientist of the Kazakh SSR (1954), Honored Scientist of the Uzbek SSR (1945).

In 1991, KazPTI, together with the Ministry of Higher Education and the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, in spite of the difficult situation in the country, held an all-Union conference "Technical and Economic Analysis and Design Theory in Mining", dedicated to the centenary of the birth of academician A.S. Popov. Based on the conference materials, a two-volume collection of scientific papers was released.
