Biography

Information about the life of Varlaam (Palitsyn) is extremely scarce. It is only known that he came from the old serving noble family of the Palitsins [1] , lived in the second half of the 16th century [1] , bore the name Vasily [1] and was a brother of Ivan Ivanovich Ushatom-Palitsyn (the alleged father of Avraamy Palitsyn ) [ 1] . In addition, Varlaam was a cellar of the Chudov Monastery [1] [2] and left behind three compositions: “The Siege of Kiev by the Tatars” [2] , “On the Three Princes” [2] , “Synopsis of Russian History from 859 to 1562, p. application of treaties of the X century ” [2] (or“ Brief Russian Chronicle ” [3] [4] ). The last of these works was identified by Metropolitan Eugene with the Archangelogorodsky Chronicle [3] , but this point of view did not find support among modern scholars who established that the Archangelogorodsky Chronicle did not arise in the second half, but at the beginning of the 16th century [5] . It is known that the works of Varlaam Palitsyn were familiar to the historian and theologian Ignatius Kulchinsky , who used them when creating the book “The Ideal of the Russian Church” (“ Specimen Ecclesiae Ruthenicae ”, 1734) [6] .
