History
Kurds are an Iranian-speaking people living in several countries in the Middle East. Most of them live in Turkey , Iraq , Syria and Iran . During the civil war in Syria, the Kurds actively fought against the terrorist organization ISIS [3] , as well as sometimes against the Syrian opposition [4] and the Syrian government.
Almost from the very beginning of the civil war there were attempts to create autonomy [4] . In November 2013, PYD created a transitional autonomous government [5] . On January 27, the creation of the autonomous canton of Kobani, part of the Kurdish autonomy in Syria, was announced [6] [7] [8] . This autonomy was planned in the north of Syria, in the region called “Syrian Kurdistan” or “Rojava” (“Rojava”).
In recent years, Kurds with the support of Western countries, led by the United States, have been promoting the idea of creating a federation in Syria [6] . As a result, in March 2016, Rojava’s autonomy was reorganized into the Democratic Federation of Rojava and northern Syria (later the name without the word Rojava was adopted), and then the Kobani canton was replaced by the Euphrates region .
