Biography

He graduated from the Mining Institute (1884), after which he went to Transbaikalia , where in 1885 he discovered the brown coal deposit Haranor . He was seconded to the Government Commissioner of the Caucasian Mineral Waters (since 1885), became famous as the discoverer of the Pyatigorsk Narzan (1890),

In 1893, in the direction of the Mining Committee, he was on a business trip to Transbaikalia on the site of the Transbaikal section of the Siberian Railway. M. Sergeyev was given the task on the spot to find out the issue of water supply for the stations of this section. Upon completion, he presented a detailed report for each of the nearly 50 stations.

In 1898 he participated in the work of the Commission for the Study of the Black Sea Coast of the Caucasus, created on the initiative of Member of the State Council Nikolai Savvich Abaza and Minister of Agriculture and State Property Alexei Sergeyevich Ermolov, which also included: geographer, professor of climatology A. I. Voeikov; professor of medicine, therapist F. I. Pasternatsky; Professor Hydrologist A.I. Lebedev. The commission had the task of choosing places on the coast convenient for the construction of various sanatoriums, mountain and coastal climate stations and other medical institutions. According to its results, the expedition members wrote detailed reports on the resort prospects of Sochi and its environs. In the summer of 1898, M.V. Sergeev examined the mineral springs of the Chvizhepse River Valley and made a conclusion about their value.

In 1909-10 cleared and expanded the central entrances of the Matsesta caves.

In 1897-1917 he served in the Mining Department , was engaged in hydrogeological support for railway construction. Head of the Technical Department of the Mining Department (for 1897), engineer for business trips and explorations (for mineral waters) since 1899 (salary of 1,500 rubles), member of the Mining Scientific Committee since 1910. Full member of the Russian Geographical Society.

At the beginning of the 20th century, he was a friend (deputy) of the chairman of the Sochi branch of the Caucasian Mountain Club, which was located on the corner of Primorskaya on Mikhailovskaya Street in the house of mother Ekaterina Pavlovna Maykova, next to the treasury.

In addition to the discovery of narzan, he investigated the sources of mineral waters: Polyustrovsky (1894), Starorussky (1899, captting in 1905), Caucasian (1903), Lipetsk (1908), Sergievsky (1913).

After the revolution, from 1918 he served in the Supreme Economic Council , was the head of the mineral water section, chairman of the Glavsol trust.

In 1919-1929 he taught at the Moscow Mining Academy , the first dean of the mining department, professor, head of the department of hydrogeology. In the 1930s, he was a consultant to the Main Resort Directorate of the People's Commissariat of Health of the RSFSR.

He died in 1939, was buried at the Vagankovsky cemetery .
