Falcon, Henry

Henri José Falcón Fuentes ( born June 17, 1961) is a Venezuelan politician. He was mayor of Barquisimeto for two consecutive terms (2000–2008) and governor of the state of Lara (2008–2017). Former chavist, who joined the opposition after 2010 and became the main opposition presidential candidate in the 2018 election , who lost.

Education

Origin

Born in the village of Nirgwe, Yarakiy State on June 17, 1961. Falcon received secondary education in Valencia , Venezuela , and later served in the Venezuelan Armed Forces in Caracas as a non-commissioned officer in the army. [ source? ] until 1987. In 1987, he married Marielba Diaz, with whom he had four children. In 1992, he received a master's degree in political science from the University of Simon Bolivar.

Career

While studying in Caracas, he met Hugo Chavez shortly before the 1992 coup attempt in Venezuela . Falcon was elected a delegate in 1999 to the National Constituent Assembly from Lara .

Mayor

In the 2000 regional elections, Henri Falcon was elected mayor of the city of Barquisimeto , the third most populated city in Venezuela, receiving 51.61% of the vote. He was re-elected in the 2004 regional elections with 64.33% of the vote.

Governor of Lara

Falcon was elected Governor of Lara in 2008 as a candidate from the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (ESPV) with 73.15% of the vote. [1] [2] [3] [4]

As Governor Falcon, he did not support the 2009 Constitutional Referendum , [5] which was ultimately supported by the Venezuelan electorate.

He was re-elected in 2012 as a candidate from the opposition coalition with 54.35% of the vote. [6]

In the 2017 election , Falcon ran for a third term in Lara, but lost to Carmen Melendez [7] . Unlike most members of the opposition coalition, he admitted defeat [8] .

Transition to Opposition

In 2007, the Movement for the Fifth Republic was transformed into the Unified Socialist Party of Venezuela (ESPV). On February 21, 2010, Governor Falcon handed a letter to President Hugo Chavez , in which he announced his withdrawal from the ESPR to become more independent. [9] Initially, he switched to another left-wing party, Fatherland for All , which is also pro-Nazi, but less dependent on power.

In June 2012, Falcon announced the creation of a new political party, Continuous Development (Progressive Vanguard), and supported the candidacy of Enrique Capriles , who is opposed to incumbent President Hugo Chavez in the presidential election . [ten]
