Vasily Ivanovich Belov ( October 23, 1932 , Timonikha , now Vologda Oblast - December 4, 2012 , Vologda ) - Russian writer and poet, one of the largest representatives of " village prose ". Member of the Union of Writers of the USSR .

Biography
Born on October 23, 1932 in the village of Timonikha (now Kharovsky district of the Vologda region ). Coming from the peasant milieu of the Russian North . His father, Ivan Fedorovich Belov, died in the war, his mother Anfisa Ivanovna raised children alone (in his memoirs, “Irreversible Years,” Vasily Ivanovich Belov describes in detail all village relatives). After seven years of training at a village school, he graduated from the Federal Law in the city of Sokol, where he received the specialty of a fitter of the 5th category, mastered the specialties of a minder and an electrician. In 1952-1955 he served in the army in Leningrad . In the newspaper of the Leningrad Military District, he published the first poems “On Guard of the Homeland”, and then went to study at the Gorky Literary Institute .
He began his literary career as a poet, but on the advice of Alexander Yashin, whom he considered his teacher, he began to write prose. Since 1964, he lived permanently in Vologda , without breaking the connection with his "small homeland" - Timonikha, in which he drew material for his work, starting with the novel "Berdyaka Village" and the book of poems "My Forest Village" (both - 1961 ). Following them saw the light of the book of short stories “Sultry Summer” ( 1963 ) and “River Rays” ( 1964 ). The publication of the novel “A Habitual Affair ” ( 1966 ) brought Belov widespread fame, and established for him the reputation of one of the founders and leaders of “village prose . ” This reputation was strengthened by the release of the story " Carpentry Tales " ( 1968 ).
People's Deputy of the USSR (elected according to the list of the CPSU), member of the Supreme Council of the USSR (1989-1991), since 1990 - member of the Central Committee of the CPSU .
In 1997, Vasily Ivanovich was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Vologda [2] for his great personal contribution to the development of Russian literature and the reflection of the original traditions of the Russian North.
In 2005, he signed the " Letter 5000 " [3] .
He died on December 4, 2012 after a long illness. It was reported in the federal media that the writer had a stroke after local residents looted and desecrated the church in Timonikh, which Belov restored at his own expense [4] . However, in the Kharovsky district, where the village of Timonikha is located, it is considered a newspaper duck: the theft of icons did exist in the church, but this happened in 2006 and did not tragically affect the writer's health. And first of all, it is not locals who are suspected of theft, but visitors from neighboring summer residents [5] . He was buried at home in Timonych.
His Holiness Patriarch Kirill expressed his condolences on the death of the writer [6] . Deputies of the Legislative Assembly of the Vologda Oblast proposed to name the writer Vasily Belov in one of the streets of the regional center and create a museum [7] .
Ethnographic Essays
Vasily Belov is also known for his ethnographic essays, published in the works “Lad” (1982) and “Everyday Life of the Russian North” (2000). These works were conceived as a “collection of sketches about northern life and folk aesthetics” [8] . In them, the author talks about traditional culture, folklore, life and crafts of the villages of the Vologda , Arkhangelsk and Kirov regions of Russia. All his life he collected oral stories, ex-sergeants, songs, proverbs, objects of material culture and everyday life, worked in archives, studied various ethnographic materials [9] . Many materials were recorded from the words of the mother of V. I. Belov - Anfisa Ivanovna Belova [8] . These essays are primarily an author’s study and only partly artistic inventions about peasant life, being a valuable source for modern ethnography of the Russian North .
“Vasily Ivanovich wrote things that in Soviet times, it was obvious, would not be published. Thinking about the bitter fate of the Russian countryside, about the grave problems. In the country of Soviets, such a tone was not accepted. Then everyone just sang and extolled. But he managed to break through this wall. They began to print it thanks to the stubborn Kharovsky character, high writing talent and hard work ” [10] .
