The creation of Monument Valley 2 was preceded by the great success of Monument Valley , which, as of 2017, has been downloaded over 30 million times. This brought Ustwo Games a big financial income. However, Ken Wong, chief designer and developer of Monument Valley, decided to leave the studio to pursue his own projects. Then Ustwo decided to invite several new professional game developers to start developing a sequel game ^[2] .

In the new game, it was decided to pay more attention to the plot, taking into account the wishes of the players on the game Monument Valley . Dan Gray, the head of Ustwo, also noted that the decision to show the development of the relationship between mother and daughter was explained by the fact that many Monument Valley developers have acquired children over the past few years and wanted to reflect their parenting experience in a new story ^[2] . Working on the mazes, the developers also sought to convey sensuality to the surrounding space; for example, labyrinths where the mother and daughter are separated, shown in a dark, brutalistic form to convey a feeling of sadness from their separation. At the same time, the team noticed that the image of the parent and child in Monument Valley 2 is noticeably different from those in most video games. In particular, if the parent in the game usually plays an insignificant role, acting as a storyteller, that Ro from Monument Valley 2 remains one of the key characters until the end of the game ^[2] .

Gamezebo representatives gave the game a rating of 4.5 out of 5, calling the plot of Monument Valley 2 phenomenal and expressive, complemented by beautiful visual effects and high-quality soundtrack ^[9] . Although the game is similar to its predecessor, it offers a new and interesting experience in managing two characters. Nevertheless, critics pointed to a significant drawback of Monument Valley 2 , which consists in too few passing levels and their low complexity ^{[8] [7] [9]} .

The game was included in the Destructoid edition of the “Games of 2017” nomination as the best mobile game ^[10] , and also won the title of the best mobile game of 2017 by the IGN magazine ^[11] and was nominated as “Best Puzzle” and “Best art project ” ^{[12] [13]} . According to the version of Game Informer , the game took second place in the list of the best puzzles of 2017 ^[14] .
