Teresa Torana ( Polish: Teresa Torańska ; January 1, 1944 , Volkovysk - January 2, 2013 , Warsaw ) is a Polish journalist and writer. Gained fame thanks to the book “They” (1985), based on interviews with former leaders of the Polish People’s Republic .

Teresa Toranskaya was born on January 1, 1944 in Volkovysk (now the Grodno region of Belarus ) occupied by the Germans. After the war ended, she moved to Poland with her family. In 1966 she graduated from the Faculty of Law of the University of Warsaw , and in 1969 - journalism courses [2] [3] . She started her career as a journalist in the editorial office of the weekly Argumenty, in 1973-1975 she worked in the monthly magazine Światowid [4] , from 1975 until the introduction of martial law she worked as a journalist in the social reporting section of the weekly newspaper Kultura [3] . In 1985 she moved to Paris , where she worked in the monthly journal of Polish emigration " Kultura " [5] . Later, Teresa Torana lived in the USA, published in Granta, L'Osservatore Romano, New York-based Polish-language publication Nowy Dziennik and other publications [6] .

In 1985, Teresa Toranjska published the book “They,” which was based on interviews with former high-ranking communist leaders of the Polish People’s Republic of 1945-1956. Her interlocutors were Edward Ohab , Jakub Berman , Roman Verfel , Stefan Stashevsky and Julia Mints, widow of Hilary Mints . This book has become a bestseller and has been translated into more than 10 languages [6] . Critics compared her style of interview with Oriana Fallaci [7] . In communist Poland, the book "They" was distributed only in the form of samizdat . In 1986, Teresa Torana won the Publishing House Solidarity Prize for the best book by a Polish author published in samizdat. In 2000, the book "They" was awarded the Prize of the Polish PEN Club. In 1994, Teresa Torana’s second book, “We,” was published, which included an interview with Leszek Balcerowicz , Jan Krzysztof Beletskim , Jaroslav Kaczynski , Viktor Kulersky , Jacek Merkel , Jan Rulewski and Pyotr Shchepanik [6] .

Between 2000 and 2011, Teresa Toranskaya worked for the Duży Format newspaper, a reporter’s supplement to the Vyborcha Newspaper . From March 2012 to the end of her life, she was published in the weekly Newsweek Polska [6] . She has also authored the Teraz Wy talk show on TVP2 and a series of television interviews with communist activists.

In 2006, her next collection of interviews, Former, was released. The interlocutors of Teresa Torana were Wojciech Jaruzelski , Jerzy Urban , Jozef Teichma and Kazimierz Konkol. The next book, “They Are” (2007) includes interviews with Eva Lentovskaya , Wanda Vilkomirsky , Michal Glowinsky , Jan Novak-Jezioranski , Edmund Vnuk-Lipinsky . Published in 2008, the book “We are. Parting '68 ”tells about the fate of emigrants who left Poland after the political crisis of 1968 . The 2010 book, Death is Late for a Minute, about the Holocaust in Poland includes three interviews with Michal Bristiger , Michal Glowinsky and Adam Daniel Rotfeld [6] .

Until the end of her life, Teresa Toranskaya worked on a book about the disaster near Smolensk in April 2010 . This unfinished book was published after her death, in September 2013. The book includes interviews with Jerzy Bar , Adam Belyan , Joachim Brudzinsky , Anna and Bronislaw Komorowski , Eva Kopach , Longina Putka, Eva Komorowska, Henrik Samsonovich , Bozena Mikka and Michal Kaminsky [6] .

Sickness and death

In 2011, Teresa Torana was diagnosed with lung cancer . After a course of chemotherapy, the cancer was mostly destroyed, but in December 2012 her health condition deteriorated sharply. Teresa Torana died in Warsaw on January 2, 2013 [8] . She was buried in the Military Ponzki cemetery.
