Biography

Born on April 1 ( 13 ), 1835 [1] . He was educated at the 5th St. Petersburg Gymnasium and at the Natural Department of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of St. Petersburg University . He was a tutor of natural sciences in the 2nd Cadet Corps , then - a teacher at the 5th Gymnasium and at the Smolny Institute .

As a science teacher, he was one of the first in Russia to apply a new pedagogical methodology, in accordance with which he tried to teach his students to make their own observations on botany and zoology , arousing a serious interest in science in them: from his students in the 5th gymnasium they became professors of botany I P. Borodin , A.F. Batalin and Ya. H. Gobi .

Later, Raevsky served as an inspector at the Prince Oldenburgsky Orphanage School , inspector of the 5th gymnasium, director of a real school in Pskov (where Raevsky arranged a botanical garden ), director of the Forest Institute (in 1881 [2] ), director of the Orenburg Teachers Institute , and chief inspector of schools East Siberia , the director of the Moscow Teachers' Institute (1888-1890), the director of public schools in the St. Petersburg province and, finally, the director of the 2nd real school in St. Petersburg.

He was the author of a number of textbooks and teaching aids, published in periodicals.

He died on November 8 ( 20 ), 1898 . He was buried in the Smolensk Orthodox cemetery [1] .

He was the great-grandfather of the composer Sergei Albertovich Cortes [3] .
