List of applicants for the 89th Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film

This article is a list of films nominated for the 89th Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film . Since the creation of the category in 1956, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences annually invites the film industries of different countries to nominate their best films for the Academy Award. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Cinema Awards is annually presented to films produced outside the United States. The Oscar Committee oversees the process and reviews all the nominated films.

Featured Movies

According to the terms of the award, the nominated films were supposed to go to the box office (at least seven days of commercial screening) primarily in their countries from October 1, 2015 to September 30, 2016. The application deadline ended October 3, 2016.

At the end of October 2016, the Academy announced the final list of eligible films. A total of 85 countries nominated their films before the deadline.
