Dennis Nicholas Assanis ( born Dennis Nicholas Assanis , birth name - Dionysios Assanis ( Greek Διονύσιος Ασσάνης ); born February 9, 1959 , Athens , Greece ) [1] [2] - Greek-American scientist and university administrator, 28 th president of the University of Delaware [3] . An internationally recognized expert in the field of fundamental and applied research of internal combustion engines and energy systems [4] . Member of the US National Academy of Engineering , American Society of Mechanical Engineers (2008), American Association for the Advancement of Science (2013), the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the [5] [6] . Has an h-index of 58 and has been cited more than 11,770 times [7] . Active member of the Greek diaspora [8] [9] .

Biography
Born and raised in Athens (Greece) [10] in the family of Nikolos and Kyriaki Assanis. The ancestors of his father were from Kefalonia and Corfu , and his mother from Kalamata ( Peloponnese ). In 1980, he immigrated to the United States [2] [11] .
He graduated from (1977), the University of Newcastle with a bachelor of science in (1980), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a master’s degree in ship architecture and marine engineering (1982), engineering (1982) and Management (1986, School of Management Sloan MIT ), as well as doctors of philosophy (1985) [2] [4] [6] .
Associate Professor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1985–1994), Professor, University of Michigan (1994–2011), Provost and Senior Vice President, Academic Affairs , New York State University at Stony Brook (2011–2016), President and Professor University of Delaware (since 2016). Consulting (since 2009) and visiting professor (2003-2008) of Shanghai University of Transport , associate researcher at the Argonne National Laboratory (1987-2002), etc. [2] [6]
He is a member of the Order of the Holy Apostle Andrew , wears the offical (title) archon (προστάτης των γραμμάτων) of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople [9] .
Member of numerous scientific and professional societies. Winner of several prestigious awards [6] .
Fluent in Greek and French [5] .
Personal life
Since 1984, married to Eleni Assanis (nee Stavrianos), married to whom he has sons Nikolos and Dimitris [2] [4] [10] .
