Biography

Charlotte Amalia Hesse-Vanfried and her sons Joseph (left) and Gyord (right) Rakoczy

Joseph Rakoczy was born on August 17, 1700. He was the second son of Franz II Rakoczy, the (future) prince of Transylvania and his wife Charlotte Amalia Hesse-Vanfried. In the year of his birth, his elder brother Leopold, who was four years old, died.

In 1700, Ferenc Rakoczi (although he belonged to the genus disputing the Habsburg power over Hungary) was forced to live with his family in Vienna at the court of Emperor Leopold I. The godfather of the baby was the son of the emperor - Joseph in whose honor the young Rakotsi was named [2] .

In 1701, Joseph Gyorgy was born to Joseph, but their father was imprisoned. Charlotte Amalia organized a successful escape, but she was imprisoned in a monastery, and two young sons were brought up as loyal subjects of the emperor. Joseph Racoci received a new name and was named Marquis di San Carlo [3] .

Joseph Rakoczi in childhood

In 1703-1711, Ferenc Rakoczy, taking advantage of the fact that the Habsburgs were engaged in the War of the Spanish Succession, tried to expel the Habsburgs from Hungary, but lost.

Joseph, becoming the Marquis of San Carlo, received from the emperor in 1723 the estates of Romanuccio and Musciano in Sicily [2] .

In 1734, thanks to the patronage of Ferenc Rakoczy (who moved to the Turkish Rodosto in 1717), Joseph received from the Sultan the title of Duke of Munkachsky and the defense of the Turkish Sultan. Joseph fled from Vienna. He visited Rome , Naples , Paris , and then Madrid . But after the death of his father, Joseph went to the Sultan. In 1736 he visited Rodosto. And he was appointed by the Turkish Sultan Mahmoud I Prince of Transylvania. Being nominated by the Turks, Joseph went to the eastern part of the former Hungarian kingdom as a contender for the throne [3] . Although Joseph took part in the Turkish military campaigns in 1737 and 1738, according to Kelemen Mikes, he was much inferior to his father in his abilities [2] .

In 1738, Joseph died at the village of Cernavoda in Dobrogea [3] [2] .

Family and Heritage

Josef Racoci was not married, but in 1736, the daughter of Maria Elizabeth Rakoczi, who lived until 1780 and became the last of the family, was born to the French noblewoman Maria de Contactier [4 ] .

And the heir to the rights in the struggle for the Transylvanian crown was Joseph's brother - Gyord . But he preferred to go to Paris [6] .
