In 1916, without completing training, he was drafted into the army. He graduated from the 4th Moscow School of Ensigns of Infantry, served as an officer for assignments under the Head of troop movement of the Moscow-Smolensk region. In 1929, he also registered an external higher education, receiving the title of mining engineer of intelligence in the reservoir specialty, and was transferred to associate professors.

The first publication was in 1924 in the MOIP Bulletin . She predetermined the direction of further activity of M. M. Zhukov - the study of the geology and stratigraphy of the Quaternary sediments, mainly in the Ciscaucasia and the Lower Volga region . In 1921-1951, he annually participated in field work on the study of Quaternary and Pliocene deposits and closely related issues of hydrogeology and engineering geology.

After the organization of the Moscow Geological Exploration Institute (MGRI) in 1930, M. M. Zhukov worked there as an assistant professor and, concurrently, worked as a senior researcher from 1934 to 1936 at the Institute of Applied Mineralogy (from 1935 - VIMS - All-Union Institute of Mineral Raw Materials ).

In 1936, he began working at the Geological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences (GIN) as an acting scientific specialist (senior research fellow). Reviews on his scientific work and recommendations for adoption were written by N. S. Shatsky (at that time professor) and G. F. Mirchink , deputy director and senior scientist at the GIN. N. S. Shatsky noted that

"In the field of Quaternary geology of the southeast of the European part of the Union, M. M. Zhukov is undoubtedly the largest specialist" .

In March 1938, the Academic Council of the Moscow Polytechnic Institute unanimously approved the decision of the certification committee of the Moscow Polytechnic Institute to award M. M. Zhukov the degree of candidate of geological and mineralogical sciences without defending a dissertation. In October of the same year, he was awarded the rank of senior research fellow at the GII. In 1941-42 He was in charge of the Quaternary Geology Department of the Ign.

Repeatedly attracted by the government to participate in examinations: on the Manych Sea Route (1934), on the construction of the Volga-Caspian Canal (1937), on the assessment of the geological conditions for the construction of the Mingachevir Dam on the river. Kure (1938), on the development of anti-landslide measures on the territory of the Stalingrad Tractor Plant (1939).

In April 1940 he defended his thesis "The Geological History of the North of the Caspian Depression", having received the degree of Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences. His largest monograph was the two-volume work “The Quaternary Deposits and the History of the North of the Caspian Depression”, based on the dissertation. In 1941, M. M. Zhukov was approved in the academic rank of professor in the department of general geology at the Moscow State Engineering Institute. He headed this department until 1944, until he moved to permanent work in Kiev.

In Kiev from 1944 to 1950 he worked as deputy head (as chief geologist) of the Ukrainian Geological Administration, at the same time heading the department of geology at the Kiev Pedagogical Institute , and from 1951 he headed the department of geology at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute . In 1959-1969 participated in the creation and head of the Laboratory of Quaternary sedimentary genetic types at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Novosibirsk). Since 1961, he has been a professor-consultant at the Kiev expedition of the Ukrainian Research Geological Exploration Institute.

The scientific heritage of M. M. Zhukov contains more than 60 printed works, he wrote four textbooks and study guides, while the geology textbook has survived four editions from 1961 to 2011.

He died in Kiev on April 6, 1972.
