The exact date of birth of Grigory Osipovich Zasekin is unknown, but it can be assumed that he began his military service at the age of about fifteen, which was the norm of that time for young nobles. The first mention of him as a "siege head" (one of the commanding persons of the fortress garrison during its siege) appears in discharge books in the early 70s of the XVI century. In the documents of that time, mention of him is found under the nickname Zubok , since none of the Zasekins had such a nickname before, we can assume that he received this nickname as a child. Apparently, Grigory Zasekin began his service in the northwestern or western borderlands of Russia, where he subsequently served in accordance with the available documents with his head and the younger governor.

His first actions as a head were connected with the Russian-Swedish war of 1570-1595 [2] . Prince Zasekin carried out military service in the Korela fortress from approximately 1574-1575 to 1579 with short interruptions. Here, together with him, served his cousin I. A. Zasekin-Solntsev . In 1577, Zasekin served in the Oreshek fortress . In 1577, he participated in the Livonian campaign . In the autumn of 1577, Grigory Zasekin and I. A. Zasekin-Solntsev were appointed junior governors in one of the town captured during the war, Trikatene , for a short time.

In the middle of the summer of 1579, Grigory Zasekin participated in the campaign of Russian troops under the command of the former Korel governor M.A. Beznin for Dvina , which pursued reconnaissance goals. The beginning of this campaign was successful for the Russian troops, and Grigory Zasekin was sent with a personal report to Tsar Ivan the Terrible about the victory, for which he received a "gold penny" as a reward from the Tsar. However, after the defeats received by Russian troops near Polotsk , Beznin's detachment returned to Russia. Subsequently, G.O. Zasekin and I.A. Zasekin-Solntsev were sent to serve on the southern borders of the Russian state, to the Wild Field, in the Volga Region, where the military and organizational talent of Prince Grigory Osipovich Zasekin, the first governor, was fully manifested fortress cities on the Volga - Samara (1586-1587), Saratov (1590) and Perevolok (later called Tsaritsyn ). In 1596 he was on the Terek , where with several governors he helped the Georgian Tsar Alexander against Shamkhal .
