Career
On June 24, 1766, after the death of his childless cousin, John Butler, the 15th Earl of Ormond, Walter Butler inherited the de jure titles of the 16th Earl of Ormond, the 10th Earl of Ossory, and the 8th Viscount of Thurls.
After inheriting titles and possessions, Walter Butler decided to move to Kilkenny Castle , which was in very poor condition. His son, John Butler, married the heiress Ann Wanderford of Castlecomer . Walter and John Butlers spent most of her inheritance on the ancestral castle. They re-laid the old access road to the castle, built a new road, and then landscaped and planted the castle park. They built stables and courtyards on this road. Walter Butler moved to the newly built Butler House in Kilkenny County.
On June 2, 1783, Walter Butler, the 16th Earl of Ormond, died at the age of 79. His titles and possessions were inherited by his only son John Butler, the 17th Earl of Ormond . In 1791, the House of Lords of Ireland recognized all the titles of John Butler, the 17th Earl of Ormond. The battles quickly regained their prestige. They always owned large plots of land in the Kilkenny and Tipperary counties , and now they were able to become the largest landowners in the southeast of Ireland.
