- January 26 - Leonard-Alexis Autier, hairdresser of Marie Antoinette , and violinist Giovanni Viotti received the right to stage French and Italian comic operas from King Louis XVI . So there was a troupe that called itself the Monsieur Theater ( fr. Théâtre de Monsieur , now the Feydo Theater ), in honor of its patron, Monsieur, frère du Roi , the future king Louis XVIII .
- January 29 - The premiere of the comic opera Gorebogatyr Kosometovich by Vicente Martin y Soler based on the libretto of Empress Catherine II took place at the Hermitage Theater .
- April 8 - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart sets off on a Berlin journey .
- August - Mozart receives an order from Emperor Joseph II , inspired by the Berlin success of The Marriage of Figaro , for the writing of the opera All Women Do, or the School of Lovers , originally commissioned by Antonio Salieri . Although her premiere in 1790 was unsuccessful, she went down in history as one of the most popular operas in the world.
- October 6 - After the uprising Parisians forced Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette to leave Versailles and move to the Tuileries Palace , the Monsieur Theater was forced to leave Tuileries . As compensation, the theater received a place in the gardens of the Brisonne Hotel ( French hôtel Briçonnet ) on Feydo Street with the right to build a new room there.
- Joseph Haydn meets , music lover, wife of Peter Leopold von Gentzinger, personal physician of Prince Esterhazy , patron of the composer. Haydn and Marianne von Gentzinger become close friends. Her correspondence with Haydn retained a personal view of the composer, which is not found in other biographical sources. [1] [2]
- Adalbert Girovets arrives in Paris , from where he soon fled to London due to the outbreak of revolution . [3]
- Luigi Cherubini becomes music director of the Monsieur Theater.
- Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst Bach becomes music director at the court of the Prussian king Frederick William II .
- Nancy Storas appears in the London production of Giovanni Paisiello ’s opera, The Barber of Seville, or Useless Precautions.
- Mozart in letters to Michael Puchberg, brother in the Masonic lodge, promising at the next meeting to tell about the stories of Antonio Salieri , "which, however, completely failed."
- Ignaz Joseph Playel becomes the bandmaster of the Strasbourg Cathedral , the first time he held this position in turn with Franz Xaver Richter .
