Biography

Vsevolod Sergeevich Ilyin was born in Moscow on May 4 (16), 1888. In 1906 he graduated from the 4th Moscow Gymnasium and entered the natural department of the Physics and Mathematics Department of Imperial Moscow University. He graduated from the University in 1910 and was left at the Department of Geology, headed by A.P. Pavlov , to prepare for the professorship.

He taught geography at the private gymnasium of Popov, later at the private gymnasium of Bot. He became interested in teaching and in 1913 graduated from the "Methodical Courses" at the Moscow School District.

Annually conducted field geological research: in 1910, on an expedition of Professor Yu. M. Shokalsky in western Russia; in 1911, conducted surveys along the Samara-Zlatoust railway; in 1912, he studied iron ores in the Nizhny Novgorod province, in 1913 he studied the Khotkovo flasks and discovered a new type of lake sediment.

In March 1913 he was enrolled as an assistant in the Department of Mineralogy, in August - as an assistant in the Department of Geology, where he taught classes on the course “Introduction to Geology”. In the years 1915-1917. He was invited by zemstvo organizations to conduct geological exploration of Bessarabia , and as a result wrote a large work that was lost during the occupation of the region. In 1917 he was called up for military service, returned to work at Moscow University in May 1919.

In 1918, under the People's Commissariat of Education, the RSFSR organized a research apparatus - the Hydro part, which was later reorganized into the Hydrogeological Department of the Land Reclamation Administration. From 1920 to 1924, while working in the land reclamation department of the People's Commissariat of the USSR , he was the organizer and participant of many expeditions to study hydrogeology with the goal of water supply, land reclamation, irrigation, and the fight against landslides in the west of the country, in the Volga region, in the Crimea, in the North Caucasus, in the West Siberia and Central Asia.

In 1922, BC Ilyin made the first broad regional generalizations that covered groundwater research in the European part of the USSR. By the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition ( VSHV ), a special commission of hydrogeologists led by BC Ilyin compiled: "A map of the European part of the USSR in hydrogeological studies", "A schematic map of groundwater in the European part of the USSR" (awarded at the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition in 1923) and "A map of groundwater waters of the Central industrial region. " The first map was published in 1929, the second was published in 1930 in the 19th volume of TSB and then was repeatedly reprinted.

In 1923, BC Ilyin first stated his theory of groundwater zonation, in which he creatively substantiated and developed the ideas of V.V. Dokuchaev about zoning in nature. Subsequently, the teachings of BC Ilyin on the zonal patterns of groundwater formed the basis for all textbooks on hydrogeology.

In 1925, he organized the Bureau of Groundwaters at the Institute of Applied Mineralogy, from where, in the form of the hydrogeology and engineering geology sector, it transferred to the State Institute of Structures. In this sector, BC Ilyin brought together young students from his school of hydrogeologists and was their supervisor until the end of his life. He carried out work on the study of landslides of the Crimea and hydrogeological studies for the irrigation of the Volga region, worked on the water supply to the Donbass and earned high marks at the 1st All-Union Hydrogeological Congress.

Under the guidance of V. S. Ilyin, hydrogeological studies were conducted under the construction of the irrigation canal of the river. Amu Darya, for irrigation of the Trans-Volga part of the Saratov province., In the Priazov plains for a land reclamation project, in the Caucasus in the areas of planned hydroelectric power plants, etc.

BC Ilyin was the creator of the largest hydrogeological research institute - the Institute of Engineering Hydrogeology and Hydrotechnics (Gidrotehgeo), which received an independent status in 1931, after his death.

In the last years of his life, he actively participated in the creation of the All-Union Hydrogeological Society.

He died suddenly in 1930 at the age of 42 years.

Scientific and educational activities

The scientific work of BC Ilyin developed mainly in two directions: regional hydrogeology and theoretical hydrogeology. In the first direction, the largest published work of his was “Groundwater of the Central Industrial Region” (1925). In the field of theoretical hydrogeology, he departed from the generally accepted views on the classification of groundwater at that time and presented his ideas in the articles “Hydrogeology” (1929) and “Groundwater” (1930), published in the Great Soviet Encyclopedia .

Since 1923, assistant professor at Moscow University, since 1929, assistant professor at the Moscow Mining Academy . At the Moscow State University he taught the course “Underground Waters of the USSR” and headed the Department of Hydrogeology, and at the University of Moscow, on his initiative, the specialty “Hydrogeology” was introduced. In 1930, during the reform of higher technical education, he actively promoted the merger of the Geological Prospecting Department of the Moscow State University with the Geological Department of Moscow University (where he was dean since 1929) and the organization of the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute (MGRI) , in which he became professor and head of the hydrogeological department.
