Biography

Alexander Matveyevich Zhirmunsky was born on June 11 (23), 1887 in the town of Chembar (now Belinsky) of the Penza province in the family of the pharmacist Moses Leibovich Zhirmunsky. In 1905 he graduated from the gymnasium department of the Peter and Paul School with a silver medal. He studied at the natural faculty of the University of Paris (Sorbonne) and in 1908 received a diploma Licencie es scienses. In 1908, AM Zhirmunsky entered the natural department of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Imperial Moscow University and graduated in 1913 with a diploma of the 1st degree. Pupil A.P. In 1915, the Land Improvement Department of the Ministry of Agriculture sent AM Zhirmunsky to the "Department of Hydrotechnical Works for Serving the Western Front" for consultations on drilling operations, collecting and processing reference materials on hydrogeology of the Smolensk, Vitebsk, Mogilev and Minsk provinces. In 1917, he headed the Geological Cabinet at the Department of Hydrotechnical Works of the Caucasus Front.

In the years 1918-1928. He worked as a geologist at the Moscow branch of the Geological Committee ( Geolcom ), and also taught geology and paleontology before moving to Leningrad in 1928. In 1924 he was elected a full member of the Moscow Society of Naturalists. Since 1928, AM Zhirmunsky worked in Leningrad, where he was elected the senior geologist of the Geolcom, and after reorganization in 1929, at the All-Union Geological Institute ( VSEGEI ).

October 15, 1936 was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR . In 1936-1938 He headed the Institute of Geology of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR and headed the Department of Geology of the Belarusian University . Returning to Leningrad in 1938, he worked as a senior specialist in hydrogeology at the State Hydrological Institute , and since 1940, as a senior researcher at VSEGEI. During the Great Patriotic War, being evacuated in 1941-1943, AM Zhirmunsky was the head of the Shafran Geological Prospecting Party of the Bashkir Geological Administration ( Ufa ).

In 1943 he defended his dissertation on the theme "The main features of tectonics and geomorphology of the western edge of the Central Russian platform." In 1944, by the decision of the Higher Attestation Commission, he was approved to the degree of Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences and, almost simultaneously, the academic title of professor.

In 1943-1945 AM Zhirmunsky worked as a senior engineer in the Committee for Geology at the USSR Council of People's Commissars and, in addition, was the supervisor of geological groups of the BSSR Academy of Sciences. Over the next three years, he led thematic work at the Leningrad Geological Department. In 1948 he retired, but did not leave his scientific work. He participated in several conferences and meetings: the Conference on the Study of Quaternary Flora and Fauna (1955), the Regional Meeting on the Study of Quaternary sediments of the Baltic States and Belarus (1957).

The author of more than 100 scientific papers on hydrogeology, Quaternary geology, geomorphology, stratigraphy. His scientific and popular science works were published in the Bulletin of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR, the Bulletin of the All-Union Geographical Society, the Proceedings of the Commission for the Study of the Quaternary Period, and the journals Science and Life and Technology for Youth .

He also wrote a number of popular science articles and books. The book "Around Asia" (1914) was written under the impression of a trip to Japan, Burma, India and Egypt in the winter of 1911-1912. The book "Geology" (1916) was published in the series "Natural Science of the 20th Century."
