Domains registered in the .nz domain zone must comply with the requirements of the registrar for second-level or third-level domains. [4] [5]

  • The maximum length of a domain name, a part of a domain name, separated by separators, not taking into account the number of characters of a first or second level domain, is .nz, .ac.nz, .co.nz, .cri.nz, .gen.nz, .geek.nz .govt.nz, .health.nz, .iwi.nz, .kiwi.nz, .maori.nz, .māori.nz, .mil.nz, .net.nz, .org.nz, .parliament.nz , .school.nz , 63 characters max .
  • The total length of the domain name including separators, no more than 253 characters.
  • The domain name can consist of letters of the Latin alphabet ( az ), numbers ( 0-9 ) and a hyphen ( - ).
  • The domain name may contain extended encoding characters ( ā, ē, ī, ō, ū ).
  • A domain name cannot begin or end with a hyphen ( - ).
  • A domain name cannot contain a sequence of two consecutive hyphens in the third and fourth positions (-).
  • A domain name cannot begin with a sequence of characters (xn - ).
