Biography

Kurt Hassert graduated in Leipzig and Berlin ; during his studies, he became a member of the student fraternity of Suevia Leipzig (Burschenschaft Suevia Leipzig). His most famous teacher was Friedrich Ratzel . Hassert’s PhD thesis was dedicated to Arctic and Antarctic exploration (Die Nordpolargrenze der bewohnten und bewohnbaren Erde, 1891). In 1895 he defended his doctoral dissertation, after which he began to give lectures at the University of Leipzig - he gave his introductory lecture on the subject of “ Eskimo migration”; In 1898, he worked as an assistant professor at a local business school.

In 1899, Hassert moved to Tübingen , after which - from 1902 to 1917 - was a full professor at the Handelshochschule Köln - during this period of his life he made a number of trips, including: to Transylvania (1902-1903), Italy (1903), to North America (1904 and 1910) and along the British Isles (1912-1913). In addition, in 1905 he attended the Italian Colonial Congress in Asmara and subsequently explored Eritrea . Since 1917 he worked at the Dresden Technical University . On November 11, 1933, Ernst Hassert was among the more than 900 scholars and professors at German universities and universities who signed the " Statement of Professors Supporting Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist State ." Already after retirement, shortly before his death in 1947, he returned as a teacher to the University of Leipzig, in connection with the call for military service of Nikolaus Kreutzburg (Nikolaus Creutzburg, 1893-1978). Despite his advanced age and numerous illnesses, he tried to fulfill his pedagogical and administrative duties even from a hospital bed .

In addition to the polar regions, Hassert's scientific interests were the Balkans and the African continent . His specialization was socio-economic geography and the geography of transport . After Hassert himself, as a student, became interested in the idea of colonialism , he wrote a lot - starting with his first small publications - about the German colonies in Africa; in general, colonial geography was a key topic in a number of his lectures. In the extensive work of the “German Colony” (Deutschlands Kolonien), published in 1899, he was able to explain in an accessible form the geography of German colonial possessions - and thereby reach a wide readership with his professional work.
