Biography
Early Years, Family, and Education
Born in a Greek Orthodox family.
Patrick's father immigrated to the United States from the island of Lefkada ( Greece ) in 1913. First, he settled in SiC ( Iowa ), where he worked on the Illinois Central Railway, and later moved to Detroit (Michigan), where he opened a cafe [10] .
Patrick's mother was from the island of Chios (Greece). Having a university degree (which at that time was very rare for a woman), she was a secondary school teacher. At her request, she received an appointment as a teacher in northern Greece, where the government tried to assimilate a large number of refugees through education (see Greek-Turkish population exchange ). At the same time, the Bulgarian government (today the FYROM ) made conflicting claims on the entire territory of Macedonia , while engaging in the killing of Greek school teachers. Patrick’s mother’s father was a priest, was actively involved in the political life of Greece, and in 1935 even took part in an attempted coup d’état . Deciding that teaching in Macedonia is a bad idea, and having political influence and connections, he found a place for his daughter in a good private school in Athens . However, this insulted the patriotic feelings of a young woman that, having entered into a fake marriage, she left for the United States in 1930 and settled in the city of Warren ( Ohio ), where her sister and brother lived. When her father’s affairs went badly, he also migrated to the United States in 1935, where he was appointed priest at the new church in Ann Arbor. Patrick's father was also on the board of directors of this church. Going to Canton (Ohio) once, he and his future father-in-law ended up in Warren, where he met his daughter [10] .
In 1950, the Patrick family moved to Washington, DC.
Attended public schools in Michigan, Ohio and the District of Columbia [7] .
In 1963 he graduated from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service.
He took advanced training courses at the American University and the Central American University in Managua ( Nicaragua ) (1967-1968) [11] .
