Marriages and children
In the late 1920s, Charles Butler emigrated to the United States , where he met with Nan Gilpin (died September 8, 1973), the daughter of Garth Griffith Gilpin. The marriage was concluded on March 3, 1935 . They had two daughters:
- Lady Ann Soucup (Constance Ann Butler) (born December 13, 1940)
- Lady Cynthia Hammer (Violet Cynthia Leela Butler) (born August 31, 1946)
A second marriage, Charles Butler married Elizabeth Rarden (died 1980), the daughter of Charles Rarden. There were no children in this marriage.
Marquis Ormond
In April 1971, after the death of his cousin, James Arthur Butler, the 6th Marquis of Ormond and the 24th Earl of Ormond (1893–1971), who had no sons, Charles Butler inherited the titles of the 7th Marquis of Ormond, the 25th Earl of Ormond , The 19th Earl of Ossory, the 17th Viscount Thurles, and the 7th Baron Butler. Since then, he became known as the Honorable Charles Butler, 7th Marquis of Ormond.
During the later years of his life, Lord Ormond maintained an active role as chairman of the society of Butler. He made regular trips to the city of Kilkenny in Ireland, where Kilkenny Castle , the main residence of his family, was located. Kilkenny Castle (in which the Butler family has not lived since 1935 ) in 1967 was transferred by the 6th Marquess of Butler to the city and the inhabitants of Kilkenny .
Lord Ormond passed away on October 25, 1997, in Chicago , Illinois , at the age of 98.
After the death of Charles Butler in 1997, the title of Marquis of Ormond was broken, and the title of Count Ormond was in a state of expectation. Pierce James Richard Butler, 18th Viscount of Montgaret (born 1961 ), who replaced his father in 2004 , is considered the most likely heir to the deceased Marquis of Ormond as Count of Ormond.
