History

The mansion was built, presumably in the first half of the XVIII century. Then it was the stone chambers of the manufacturer I. I. Telezhnikov. At the end of the 18th century, the chambers belonged to the physician and professor of Moscow University F. G. Politkovsky [2] .

After 1812, the house belonged to an official D. B. Mertvago . In 1824-1827, the house was rented by chamberlain M. M. Sontsov, husband of E. L. Pushkina, aunts A. S. Pushkin . In the salon, E. L. Pushkina lectured on the latest French literature A. Decampus . Attended these lectures and A.S. Pushkin. As P. I. Bartenev wrote from the words of A. P. Elagina, she “ took a ticket and went to listen to acquaintance with Decamp. In the very first lecture, she met Pushkin there, who sat down with her and laughed at the poor Frenchman all the time while reading, and almost out loud. This completely dropped the lecture. Descamps was forced not to finish the course, and after a long time they reproached Pushkin for this ” [2] .

In the late 1820s, the house was purchased by staff captain A.A. Elagin, husband of A.P. Elagina. The literary salon in the Yelagin’s house, called the “Republic at the Red Gate”, was visited by A. I. Herzen , N. P. Ogaryov , E. A. Baratynsky , P. Ya. Chaadaev , V. F. Odoevsky , A. S. Khomyakov , V. A. Zhukovsky and other famous writers and poets [2] . One of the regular visitors to the salon, K. D. Cavelin , recalled [3] :

... the house and salon of Avdotya Petrovna was one of the most beloved and most visited centers of Russian literary and scientific figures. Everything that was intelligent, enlightened and talented in Moscow gathered here on Sundays. Celebrities who came to Moscow, Russians and foreigners, appeared in the Elagins' salon. The Slavophile trend prevailed in it, but this did not stop people from various views from constantly visiting Yelagin evenings ... Here they met and got acquainted with everything that was outstanding in Russian literature and science, listened to disputes and opinions, took part in them themselves and had little - gradually strengthened in love for literary and scientific studies ...
