History
On October 14, 2014, as the Ukrainian political crisis worsened , Radio Liberty and Voice of America launched the thirty-minute daily Present Time program [4] . In October 2016, the project expanded and began to work as a television channel [4] . Executive producer Kenan Aliyev said in an interview with Reuters : “We believe that our objective and balanced channel will serve as an alternative to the misinformation and lies that we sometimes see in Russian state-owned publications” [3] . According to Glenn Cates, editor-in-chief of the present-day digital broadcasting department, Glenn Cates, the TV channel’s team was inspired by the growing popularity of short Facebook videos offered by media such as BuzzFeed and Al Jazeera [5] . According to the director of the media project Daisy Sindelar, the potential reach of the channel is 3.5 million households in different countries [6] .
On November 13, 2017, Russia Today was registered in the United States as a foreign agent [7] . Already on November 15, the Russian Ministry of Justice threatened to limit the activities of the “Present” channel due to the fact that it contained “signs of the performance of the functions of a foreign agent” [7] . On December 5, 2017, the Ministry of Justice recognized the “Present” TV channel as the media “acting as a foreign agent ” [8] . At the moment (2018), State Duma deputies are proposing to close the “Present” TV channel, which ignores the Russian norm on air labeling for channels that have received the status of a foreign agent.
