Alfred Forke ( German: Alfred Forke ; January 12, 1867, Scheningen - July 9, 1944, Hamburg ) is a German sinologist , professor at the Universities of Berlin and Hamburg .

Biography
Alfred Forke was born on January 12, 1867 in Schöningen ; He attended high school in Magdeburg . After receiving secondary education, Forke studied law at the universities of Geneva and Berlin. At the end of the course, he passed the state exam on law - after which, in 1889, in Rostock, he wrote and defended his dissertation, with a Ph.D. in law. At the same time, he studied linguistics at the Department of Oriental Languages and, from 1890 to 1903, was a translator from Chinese at the German consular offices in Beijing .
In 1903, Alfred Forke succeeded his former professor, Professor Karl Arendt (Carl Arendt, 1838-1902) at the Department of Oriental Languages at the University of Berlin. Two decades later, in 1923, Forke was replaced by Professor Otto Franke at the University of Hamburg - at the new place of work, Forke also headed the department devoted to the study of China until 1935. On November 11, 1933, Alfred Forke was among the more than 900 scholars and professors at German universities and universities who signed the " Statement of Professors Supporting Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist State ."
Forke died on July 9, 1944 in Hamburg .
