Sexual perversion

Sexual perversion or sexual perversion (also perversion of sexual feelings ) - any sexual behavior that is considered in a given society to be a deviation from accepted sexual norms and standards in terms of the direction of sexual desire or how to satisfy it [1] [2] . The attribution of a particular type of sexual behavior to sexual perversions is very problematic [3] and can vary at different periods in the history of mankind and in different cultures [1] [2] .

In the past, sexual perversions were considered not only painful disorders, but also condemned by public morality. Modern science considers the concept of paraphilia (sexual deviation), ranking only some of them as pathologies [4] .

Term History

The concept of sexual perversion has come into use since the 1870s, when the work of a number of scientists (primarily R. Kraft-Ebing ) justified the interpretation of deviations from normal sexuality as painful , requiring treatment and subject to medical treatment (and not just religion or jurisprudence ) Kraft-Ebing considered as a perversion all sexual manifestations that do not correspond to the goals of nature ( reproduction ), provided that it is possible to have sexual intercourse in a natural way.

It is generally accepted that the terms “ perversion ” and “ inversion ” were first used in a joint work by J. Charcot and W. Manyan “Transformation of sexual feelings and other sexual perversions” ( French Inversion du sens génital et autres perversions sexuelles , 1882 ), devoted to attempts "Treat" homosexuality with hypnosis , and translated into Russian by V. M. Tarnovsky in a review article of 1884 , "Perversions of sexual feelings."

The use of the term "sexual perversion" in medicine at the end of the 20th century was criticized. It was indicated that the words “perversion” and “pervert” themselves have a negative, condemning semantic color [5] . In addition, from the point of view of modern medicine, psychiatric pathology requiring treatment can only be recognized as a violation that impedes the activity of a person as a member of society [6] , causes disturbances that impede work , normal social activity and relationships with others, causes suffering to the subject [ 7] .

In accordance with this, those sexual practices that were previously designated as sexual perversions are currently regarded as sexual deviations (deviations), and it is believed that in most cases (when there are no criteria for a mental illness), medical intervention is not required [8] .
