Biography
The son of Major General Pavel Matveevich Tolstoy [1] from his second marriage with Maria Konstantinovna Benkendorf . As the eldest of the descendants of Field Marshal Kutuzov, in 1859 he received the right to add his last name to his own.
In 1857 he was educated in His Majesty's Page Corps . In 1862 he was a titular adviser [2] , and since 1869 he was a court adviser with the rank of chamber junker , consisting of the state over the state at the embassy in Paris [3] .
In 1878, a state adviser with the rank of Jägermeister of the Imperial Court, who was under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an honorary magistrate of the Podolsk province and trustee of the 2nd Podolsky Moscow educational house [4] . From 1892 to 1896 he was the director of the Moscow-Brest Railway. In 1893 he was a full-time state adviser , trustee of the Imperial St. Petersburg Nikolaev Children's Hospital [5] . In 1897 he was promoted to Privy Councilor [6] . In 1900, the honorary guardian of the Board of Trustees of the Institutions of Empress Maria Fedorovna [7] . In 1904 he was promoted to Obergermeister of the Court of His Imperial Majesty [8] .
He was awarded all Russian orders up to the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky with diamond signs granted to him on September 18, 1907. According to contemporaries, Count Tolstoy was small in stature, not very kind, but smart man [9] . Spineless and pleasant in society, he received a huge fortune after his wife, and together with her he was engaged in his squandering, which he achieved brilliantly [10] . He died in 1914 in Paris.
Family
Wife (from 09/09/1866) - Ekaterina Dmitrievna d`Andriani (08/26/1848 - 03/23/1937 ), the late daughter of the director of the Imperial Theaters, millionaire Andrei Ivanovich Saburov from his connection with the widow of Leon Butler. The wedding was in the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Paris . The guarantors were father the groom, E. D. Naryshkin and M. N. Sazonov , by the bride - Prince P. L. Wittgenstein and V. Chicherin. According to a contemporary, the countess was “a person of spirits and not bad” [11] . Living with her husband in France, she shone at the court of Napoleon III and surprised all of Paris with her diamonds. Princess E. Radziwill found Katti Tolstoy one of the most beautiful creatures she had ever met: “The face of the Madonna and her direct profile were requested on the artist’s canvas, but not one of them conveyed her charm. There were beauties more dazzling, but none of them possessed such wonderful, beautiful eyes that made Madame Tolstoy unusually attractive and gave her an indescribable charm. At the same time, she was kind, kind and sweet. Age did not destroy her beauty, and gray hair only added attractiveness. Having lost her husband, she lived in her house in Paris, which she arranged with unsurpassed taste. Being a grandmother, she did not make a secret out of it, and the years did not have power over her ” [12] . Children:
- Alexander (08.09.1867; Paris — 1914), fleet lieutenant.
- Paul (02.25.1869; Paris — 1909), a colonel, died of wounds after the Russo-Japanese war .
