History
In Obdorsk in the late 1860s, the society “decided” to build a new Orthodox church . The building case, as it was then accepted, was considered by the Tobolsk Spiritual Consistory in May 1869 and a special book was issued to collect donations for the construction of a new church [2] [3] .
Soon, several projects for the construction of a wooden church were submitted to the Consistory, but a decision was made to build a stone church.
No matter how the operation seems to be feasible and no matter how coveted, the construction of the temple of God at the end of the universe, however, the members indicated by the consistory, merchants Plekhanov, Nevolin and Kornilov, refused to participate in its construction. The merchants completely refused to do well for the short-lived wooden church and spoke out in favor of building a stone church in Obdorsk. This opinion, in principle, is so reasonable and so convenient in terms of time and money that one cannot disagree with it.
- V. Ya. Templing "From the History of the Obdorsk Mission" [3] .
Considering the experience of the previous construction of wood, the commission took into account that the purchase and delivery of “construction materials” will cost more than the manufacture of bricks on the spot. Practical merchants also noticed: the wooden building "no matter how good and solid, lasts no more than 50 or 60 years, and the estimated amount will be significant - 7,259 rubles 41 kopecks." And at the same time, a temple built of brick will have to spend no more than twenty thousand rubles, but it "will exist forever." The future building also required a reliable foundation : after all, the temple was to be built on permafrost [2] [4] [3] .
On October 30 ( November 11 ), 1878 , the project and estimate were approved and the final decision was made to build a stone church in the village of Obdorsky of the Berezovsky district of the Tobolsk province in the name of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul with the chapels of St. Basil the Great and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker [4] .
We, the undersigned s. Obdorsky, parishioners of the church that was once again being built in the name of the holy apostles Peter and Paul, <...> unanimously decided: to ask His Grace Bishop Vasily to bless and authorize the construction of the church ", and to examine the documents approved and approved by our archpriest Fr. To Petr Popov, whom we trust and to submit a petition from us with a verdict and plan.
- V. Ya. Templing “From the History of the Obdorsk Mission” [5] [4] .
In 1883, a contract was signed for the construction of a stone church, in which the "construction committee" undertook to complete the construction within five years, but work began after all the research in 1886. However, without an architect and other specialists, the construction of such a complex structure for the local “construction committee” was impossible and in 1887 all work was suspended. In 1889, an architect was found and supervision of the construction of the cathedral was entrusted to the architect Gottlieb (Bogdan Bogdanovich) Zink [6] [4] .
The construction was completed in 1893. At the opening of the Cathedral of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul with side-altars on the sides in the name of His Grace Basil the Great and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, all the honorable residents of Obdorsk and Tobolsk were present. Solemn events were attended by Governor Bogdanovich, accompanied by the prosecutor and inspector of the Tobolsk Medical Board. Consecrated in September 1894 by Bishop of Tobolsk and Siberian Agafangel (Preobrazhensky) [4] [6] .
In October 1930, the Soviet government decided to liquidate the Peter and Paul Church in Obdorsk. Subsequently, the premises of the temple were used as a dormitory , vegetable store, and government institutions. The white stone fence was demolished, the domes and the bell tower disappeared, the internal layout was repeatedly changed.
In the 1980s, the Orthodox community was revived in Salekhard , which was restored by Father Superior Zosima (Gorshunov) and Akilina Evgenievna Esnyatskaya from Tobolsk. In 1990, the temple was returned to believers for permanent use [4] .
On July 11, 1991, the bishop of Tobolsk and Tyumen, Dimitry (Kapalin), performed the rite of consecration of the restored church. From 1991 to 1998, a partial restoration and restoration of the temple and aisles was carried out. A new iconostasis and interior decoration was installed. After the formation of the Salekhard diocese in 2011, the Peter and Paul Church becomes cathedral [4] .
One of the shrines of the Peter and Paul Church is the newfound icon of St. Nicholas , Archbishop of Mir Lycia . There has been a Sunday school for children at the church for many years [4] .
