At first it was guided by social democracy; from 1996 to 2005 the party was a member of the Socialist International . From 2004 to 2007 PD was a junior member of the ruling coalition Alliance of Justice and Truth, although according to opinion polls the party remained the most popular in Romania. After being elected president in 2004, its leader Traian Basescu was obliged to formally suspend leadership of the party, but even after that PD was actually a “party of the leader" - Traian Basescu played the main role in it.
