Biography
Walter Uffenorde was born on January 1, 1879 in Dipholz in the family of a cigar industrialist, Augustus Albrecht Christian Uffenord and his second wife Regina (nee Harrihausen). After the early death of both parents - in 1879 and 1882 - Walter was raised in the family of his uncle, the landowner Wilhelm Harrihausen, who lived in Geismar, near Göttingen . From 1889 to 1898, Walter attended a gymnasium in Göttingen. Initially, in the academic year 1898/1899, he studied law in Leipzig for two semesters, with the aim of later moving to the forestry department. Due to an ear disease, he was denied the chosen specialty. Instead, in the summer semester of 1899, Uffenorde set about studying medicine at Göttingen. In the summer of 1900 in Leipzig, he passed a preliminary examination for a doctor; in 1903 - already in Göttingen - he passed the state exam and in the same year became a candidate of medical sciences .
After working as an assistant in the ENT clinic, Walter Uffenorde went to Vienna , Freiburg, Halle and Berlin . In 1907, he received his Ph.D. at the University of Göttingen - his work was devoted to the ethmoid bone . Until 1921, Uffenorde was a private assistant professor and senior doctor in Göttingen (he was appointed professor in 1912). From 1914 to 1916, he headed the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Gottingen and was a doctor ( German: Facharzt ) of the XIth Army Corps. In 1916-1917, he, together with a field hospital, visited France and Russia .
In 1921, Uffenorde was appointed associate professor in Bonn , where in 1921-1922 he also served on the board of the university clinic. On May 6, 1922, he was appointed professor at the University of Marburg [1] and director of the local otolaryngological clinic. In 1927-1928, Walter Uffenorde was the dean (and in 1944 - deputy dean) of the Faculty of Medicine. In 1927, the Marburg Polyclinic received a new building. In 1938, Uffenorde refused to return to his former job in Gottingen; in 1945 he retired.
In 1932, Walter Uffenorde became a member of Leopoldina ; In 1936-1937 he was chairman of the Society of German Otolaryngologists. In addition, he was the editor of the journal Otolaryngologist ( German: Hals-Nasen-Ohrenarzt ).
