Arved (Arvid) Vladimirovich Porten (sometimes Poorten , German Konrad Arved Poorten ; 1 (13) May 1836 , Riga - 7 (20) March 1901 , Riga ) is a Russian cellist of Swedish origin.
Born in the family of a shipbuilder - music lover, owner of the home salon, in which Richard Wagner , Franz List and other prominent musicians have been [1] . He played in the home piano quartet with two brothers and sister (who, however, did not become professional musicians). He studied in Riga under Karl Friedrich von Lutzau and Karl Marx-Marcus , then in Dresden under Friedrich Kummer and finally in 1856-1857. in the Brussels Conservatory at Francois Serva , after a year he graduated from the course with the first prize.
For several years he has toured in Belgium, the Netherlands, England, France, Spain and Portugal. In 1860 he settled in St. Petersburg, worked in the orchestra of the Italian Opera. In the early 1870s. taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory as an assistant to Karl Davydov . On the basis of nervous exhaustion, he left St. Petersburg in 1874 and lived for two years in Warsaw. Then he returned to the tour activities. Since 1886, Professor of the Ghent Conservatory .
Author of several pieces for one or several cellos, including “Night Song” ( fr. Chant de nuit ) for four or eight cellos, “Praise Glinka , trio based on the opera“ Life for the Tsar ”" (for three cellos and piano) et al. Published in French two essay books about his travels in Russia: “An artistic tour into the depths of Russia” ( fr. Une tournée artistique dans l'interieur de la Russie ; Brussels, 1873) and “The Lost Corner of Russia” ( fr. Un coin perdu de la Russie ; Paris, 1883), as well as a book of reflections on music "The Testament of a Musician" ( fr. Le testament d'un musicien ; Paris, 1890, Russian iy translation 1891).
