Description

Small fluffy reddish-brown German wasps (wingless females about 10 mm, winged males up to 15 mm), head and abdomen are mostly black. Males of the genus Zavatilla differ from other oriental members of the tribe Trogaspidiini with symmetrical penis valva (former tribe Petersenidiini) in the following features: antennae with one ventral keel, volcella with paracuspis, flagella short (flagellomer 1 has a length of 1.0-1.2 × width) , 2nd metasomal sternite with a short lateral felt line. Females of the genus Zavatilla differ from other oriental members of the tribe Trogaspidiini with propodeum not wider than the pronotum (former tribe Petersenidiini) in the following features: transverse curved keel of clypeus with two sublateral protrusions, which may be smaller or larger than the basal median protrusion of the clypeus; wide scutellar flake (0.64-0.72 × distance between the scutellar flake and the inner edge of the posterior spiracle); the pygidial plate is wide (0.6-0.7 × the total width of the 6th metasomal tergite), laterally bordered, finely granular, or longitudinally furrowed in the basal part and mostly shiny in the apical part. Males have 13-segmented antennae, females - 12-segmented. The body is in thick hairs. A female wasp sneaks into a strange nest and lays eggs on the host larvae, which feed their own larvae [1] .

Systematics

4 types. Belongs to the tribe Trogaspidiini . The genus was first isolated and described by Japanese hymenopterologist Kazuhiko Tsuneki ( Kazuhiko Tsuneki , University of Osaka , Japan ) as a subgenus in the genus Smicromyrme Thomson, 1870 . In 1996, he was promoted to tribal status [1] [2] . The type species was first described in 1913 by the Italian zoologist Eduard Zavattari ( Edoardo Zavattari , 1883-1972) [3] under the original name Mutilla gutrunae Zavattari, 1913 .
