History
It is named after the Sioni Cathedral located on the street (d. 6).
The former name is Armory Street, according to the gunsmiths who worked on the street. There were also shops changing and the only post office in the city [1] . The name of Zion received no later than 1841 [2] .
The early history of the street is little known, since its entire area was terribly ravaged by the Persians during the invasion of Aga Mohammed Khan (1795). The entire civilian development of the street (on the plan of Tsarevich Vakhushti the street area is densely built up [3] ) was destroyed and recreated already in the middle of the 19th - beginning of the 20th centuries, after Georgia entered the Russian Empire (1805) using the remains of the old stone buildings as material for new buildings and with a possible change in street tracing.
