History

The city was founded by the Romans, and it was inhabited mainly by the Celts of the Sagi tribe. The first bishop of Xie was St. Latwin , who lived in the V century. By the 9th century, Xie was already a fortified city and fell under the onslaught of the Normans . For several centuries, the city was divided along the Orn River: the northern part belonged to the bishops, and the southern one belonged to the counts of Alencon; this continued until 1356, when the counts of Alanson began to completely control Xie. During the wars between the king of England Henry II and his sons, the city was repeatedly taken by assault and passed from hand to hand. In 1418, shortly after the start of the Hundred Years War , Xie was occupied by the British. During the Religious Wars, Xie was looted by Protestants and in 1589 joined the Catholic League , but a year later he voluntarily surrendered to Henry IV .

Xie is the center of the diocese , covering the territory of the Orn department and certain territories of neighboring departments.
